Rio de Janeiro

Cidade Maravilhosa

On the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro is the city of Rio de Janeiro, land of the tiny bikini and even tinier speedo and one of most scenic and well loved cities world wide.

Locals are known as "Cariocas" and pronounce Rio as "Heeo Je Han-ear-ho", wear Havaianas (flip flops/thongs) all the time, let the days slip by on the beaches and party the nights away.

Highlights
 • Christ the Redeemer
 • Sugar Loaf mountain
 • The beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema
 • The Mardi Grais Carnival in February
 • Maracana Stadium - the largest soccer/football stadium in the world
 • Lapa's amazing night-life
 • New Year's Eve at Copacabana beach
 • The favela tour

Best time of year to visit
Any - though most popular and crowded is December to February - when prices double.

Day 697 (24.02.09) As well as the incredible parades happening nightly in the Sambadromo, various areas of Rio host street parties and parades throughout the days of carnaval. We´d heard about a huge street party due to be held in Santa Teresa at 2pm so after a lie-in to sleep off the previous evening´s festivities, a group of us got our glad rags on and headed that way in a couple of cabs. When we arrived we found that the party we´d heard about had actually occurred at 9am instead and it turned out that the city actually advertises this party [View Full Entry]

PARTY!

And so, this is it!......The final destination of the dream year! A few hours on our final bus ride and we arrived back in Rio de Janeiro on the final day of Carnival. We checked in to our stupidly expensive hostel, where we were dumped our bags in the shoebox containing 5 beds (2 bunks, one of them 3 stories!)....this place was over twice the price of the lovely family home we'd just come from and was a little bit of jault back to the reality in which we'd become acustomed in the last year! Anyway, we weren't there for the [View Full Entry]

A hot and hazy afternoon...

I could get used to this lifestyle, beach, healthy food and sunshine as my morning ritual. Eventually a few of us made a plan to sugar loaf. Firstly we all went for lunch after our tanning on the beach. When we went for lunch we tried a typical Brazilian dish. Feijoada (boiling pieces of meat in a pot with 4 other separate pots containing dried pork fat, garlic spinach, flourry garlic and veg) Auds almost as good as beef wellington!! Full and ready to go we made our way to the sugarloaf. Instead of getting the first cable car we trekked [View Full Entry]

Day 4 After waking up a more respectable time we headed back to Ipanema beach. So we jumped on the bus for another white knuckle ride before chilling on the beach. the waves were huge but not surf material as they were 'Dunkers' according to the Ozzie chicks! After a couple of hours we headed to a bar at the beach and watched some locals playing foot volleyball. There touches were something else! It got to about 4.30 and as we were close to the English bar we thought we'd go and watch Liverpool vs real Madrid. What a waste of [View Full Entry]

Today, I slept in till 12. SWEET!! after alot of convincing I managed to round up a few people to go to Niteroi to see one of the famous buildings from Oscar Niemyer- architect who designed Brasilla. The building was the museum of modern art. The building spectacular, like an aliens space ship. We had to take alovely boat journey there but an eye opener bus journey through downtown which was so rough ad scary that even the Brazilians guiding us through it are scared!! When we returned to the hostel Alessandro cooked real Italian pasta for the 11 of us [View Full Entry]

Well what can I say! I don´t think I will be able to adequately describe to you the experience that has been Rio Carnival. Things were also bought up 10 notches once I entered the amazing Sambodrome. For the last 5 days Rio has transformed into the biggest party city on the planet. There have been street parties and blocos on every corner, drummers and bands playing their tunes on the beaches and everyone singing and dancing in the streets. It´s also compulsory to dress up. You can be anything and believe me I´ve seen them all - from Fred Flindstone [View Full Entry]

Day 3 After waking at 2pm we decided we would head to the beach in Ipanema, we asked Michelle for the correct bus number, got showed and headed outside into the 34degree heat. The bus runs adjacent to our hostel so it was easy to flag the bus down, each bus has a driver and conductor with a turnstile but some buses only except swipe cards...so we failed with our first attempt to get the bus but the second one that came we paid 2rais and were on our way. We got off a little early in coca and wondered down [View Full Entry]
