When I woke up this morning, I remembered that the Brazilian soccer federation (CBF) inaugurated their new headquarters a month ago and in their new building, a museum dedicated to the national team. The main attraction: replicas of the 5 World Cups. I say replicas because the trophy for first 3 World Cups Brazil won was different than the one used nowadays. It was called the Jules Rimet Trophy and Brazil got to keep the lone version of this trophy when Brazil won it for the 3
rd time in 1970. The only problem is that the lone version was eventually stolen and melted. Yes, Brazilian robbers destroyed the World Cup trophy. Brilliant!!!! Read more about it here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Cup_Trophy So I grabbed a bus to Barra da Tijuca, which is a town/beach just beyond Ipanema and Leblon. I enjoyed the bus ride because it had been about 25 years since I was last there, and tons has changed since as you can imagine. Back in 1989, I think, my dad took my brother and I to a Formula One race here in Rio, and the track is located in Barra da Tijuca. I don’t remember much about Rio from that trip,
except the dangerous bus drivers, the F1 race itself, attending an F1 practice and our bus ride from where we used to live.
Once I got there, I made a mistake and didn’t get off the bus at the big Shopping Centre, instead choosing to stay on for one more stop. This caused me to have to walk back a couple kilometers and wasted 30 minutes of my time. Oh well, I got to see that much more I guess. Haha
I found the CBF building pretty easily, and as I approached the guard, I asked him if this is where the museum is. From the look on his face, I knew something was wrong. He told me that the museum was inside BUT that it only opens to the public on August 1
st!!!!!!! He continued by saying that the website is wrong, and that there was nothing he could do for me. Just lovely!! Oh well, I’ll come here with Janel and Owen next time then and they can see the trophies too.
I then walked to the Barra Shopping Centre and hung out there for a few hours. This mall is pretty big and is
THE place to shop at in Rio. I got Janel some cool Havaiana sandals, hopefully she likes them.
After a little while, I decided to take a bus back to Leme hoping to beat the rush hour. It went pretty well the first half, but once we got to Ipanema and Copacabana, things slowed down a bit. This just gave me an extra opportunity to watch people as they walked, jogged, played beach soccer, beach volleyball, surfed, etc... Once I got back to Leme, I saw a soccer game going on right in front of our building. So I quickly went upstairs, changed, and went down to join the fun. It was basically myself, 2 other Brazilians and the rest were all Argentines. We played 2 games and that was that. Just enough to sweat a bit. I just love these little games.
Tomorrow is the 3
rd Place game between Brazil and Holland. I don’t really care at all for this game, never have. I always watch them though because lots of goals are usually scored. So Holland will probably repeat what Germany did. Stay tuned!!!! hahaha
