Rio - Rochina favela tour
Published: November 2nd 2012South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro » LeblonThe Favela tour yesterday was an eye opening experience. We were taken to Rochina, or 'little farm', which is the largest Favela in Rio. The favela covers a square kilometer on a steep hill and is home to approximately 70,000 people. There were shots taken here for Fast Five and The Incredible Hulk. There were a few of us that went from the hostel, in total there was 15 of us in the group. We were picked up at the hostel and driven to the bottom of the Favela. Rather than having us drive around in the van the guides set up the tour so that we each jump on the back of a motorbike taxi which takes us to the top of the hill. This was to give us a better feel of the place, ... read more

Published: February 21st 2012South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro » LeblonSo we are a week into our 8 month holiday and already it feels like we have done so much. Rio is beautiful and the people are fantastic. We have visited most of the must do sights in Rio including Sugarloaf mountain, the christ statue, flavellas and today we have just been hang-gliding over the city which was fantastic. As for our canival experience we have been to a street party in Ipanema and visited the Sambadrome yesterday which was unforgetable the floats and dancers were beautifully decorated. Rio is a very laid back area with parties on the beach everyday as people being to wake up the party starts and seems to go on till midnight with a people walking past in a variety of costumes starting with babies in nappies to rabbits and men ... read more

Published: March 7th 2011South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro » LeblonAn early morning rise -5.00-rewarded us with the spectacular entrance into Rio De Janeiro's harbour. Dawn was breaking and the surrounding hills were dusted with low clouds. The well known statue of Christ slowly came into view and made quite an impression. We excitedly looked forward to our trip there later in the morning. We boarded the coach and started our trip; we travelled past several beaches including the famous Copacabana beach. It was very packed with families enjoying their children’s summer holidays, plenty of beach volley ball. The coach did not stop to let us sample it's delights and we had chosen the wrong side of the bus to sit on, so we did not see much of it either. We arrived at the base of the statue of Christ and it was very hot!!! ... read more

Published: September 11th 2010South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro » LeblonDay 5-10th September Day 5 began with both of us waking up at 7am (as you all know this is extremely unusual behaviour for my husband!) there was a faulty AC unit outside our window and it kept making a really loud buzzing sound....not good. However we both got up and pottered around for a bit before the hostel breakfast was served. For all of those people who wondering how Ellory would cope in such a meat-eating continent, I would say...hmmmm....right now! Breakfast was a good example of this. Everyone gets a tray of some yummy fruit, bread and....ham and cheese wrapped together. I thought it was great and hoovered it down, Ellory was not so impressed!!! Think the lack of sleep didn’t help matters either. However, we were soon both fed and watered (getting a ... read more

Published: July 6th 2010South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro » LeblonWe set off from Iguazu stopping in Curitiba for one night before heading to Paraty, as I said in last blog a beach resort 4 hours outside Rio. We arrived early evening so only had time for some dinner check into hostel and a few drinks before going to bed. Chris (Norway) and I were sharing a room and as they only had couples doubles left we ended up having 3 rooms joined together with 11 beds! lol Following day we had booked a Caipirinha boat trip, a short trip along the beaches being served Caipirinhas all day, Caipirinha is the Brazilian national alcoholic cocktail made from Cachaça, sugar and lime, very moreish! We had to walk 20 mins into town to get the boat, a small hippyish affair with just us on it. The boat ... read more
Is it a hot flash or is it Rio?
Published: December 26th 2009South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro » LeblonOnce off the bus we immediately find Rio to be a little more tourist friendly with more English signs and more English spoken. As with Beijing, Brazil is determined to have more of their people speak English in time for the Olympics 2016. We were in Beijing six months before the 2008 games and all I can say is, let's hope Brazil is more prepared. We grab a taxi and head to our Couchsurfing's (CS) home. Vera and Bernardo live in a nice apartment in the Leblon neighborhood of Rio which is just one kilometer from Ipanema beach. You know the one with the girl. After settling in, meeting all the pets and getting a key, we head out for a long stroll down the beaches of Ipanema and Leblon. The breeze nicely refreshes us in ... read more
