Hey guys, I promised I'd try to make them short but I don't think I can. If you don't read it - I won't be offended! Rio is amazing! It's taken me a few days to get used to it and relax a little (but not too much dad) but I'm loving it here! My hotel does not look like it does on the internet... It's an area that is described as up and coming! So in Rio that translates as buzzing but don't walk around on your own at night! To be fair that applies anyway in Rio. I've been spending most of my time with guys I met on the plane Matt and Henry - didn't know each other either. Both really nice and looked out for me in the airport when I went ... read more

... read more

Rio hit us yesterday....we landed and it finally sunk in that we were far far away!!! It was been awesome and not as busy or scary as we imagined! we were tucked up in bed quite early last night after hours of flying bt managed to squeeze in some essential beach time at copacabana - awesome!!...but am pink already!! The sights are amazing - lovely long beaches with random mountaineous sights in the background - beautiful!! we had a active start this morn and managed to go for a run along the beach and did some sit ups in a lil made up weight centre on the beach front - a mini muscle beach!! well funny. We have been up to Santa Theresa today and then went for some traditional brazilian food and a coriachipanha (or ... read more

So having survived our first night in Rio, we stumbled into Sunday and Brazil's election day, where the incumbent President Luiz Inaçio Lula da Silva went into the final day's polling marginally above the 50% needed to secure re-election. However as the day progressed, it became obvious that Lula wasn't going to make it, with his nearest challenger Geraldo Alckmin picking up just over 41% of the vote. This means that there's gonna have to be a runoff election between these two at the end of October, along with all the other undecied gubernatorial contests. Good shit! Otherwise, the lads and I took the cable-tram up the hills into Santa Teresa, a quaint sort of neighbourhood on one of the smaller hills in Rio. It was only 60 centavos and I can safely say it's among ... read more

Z vremenom sva imela ''sreco'', saj v tem casu ze dolgo niso pomnili taksnih nalivov. Res da ni bilo ... read more

We arrived in Rio 9am local time after a gruelling 13 hour flight from Heathrow via Sao Paulo. As soon as we´d dropped our bags at the hostel, we headed down town for our first taste of the world famous Copacabana beach. After a stroll down the 3km of golden sands, it was time to relax at a beach side cafe serving the ultimate refreshment, a near ripe coconut straight from the freezer, top hacked off with a machette and a straw to lap up the chilled milk inside. Heaven on a hot (31 degrees!) day. Although we were shattered from our long flight, the lure of football at the Maracana stadium was enough to keep us awake. Our hostel ran a trip to the largest football stadium in the world, where we watched local team ... read more

My boogers are still black from that train ride two days ago. Lord knows what my lungs look like. My hands, well, I was finally able to wash them clean once we got back to Rio this afternoon. Previous to that... We checked out of our crappy hotel on the outskirts of town yesterday morning so we could check into a crappy hotel in the thick of the pure awfullery of Vitoria. Our room was tiny, lightless, and already occupied by a twelve-pound cockroach named Thiago. Thiago showed us around a bit - the bathroom, where the light switches were, how to open the windows - and thus didn't take kindly to me trying to smash him flat. Now I know, you shouldn't step on cockroaches. They might be pregnant and, if they are, will scatter ... read more

yesss... two of my favorite things. well, with all our planning and arranging, we ran out of time to learn portuguese. no problem, i thought. we'll pick it up along the way. i know spanish, i'm sure we'll be fine. i was unaware that portuguese sounds a lot like what i imagine to be italian and latin...spoken backwards. and that practically no one speaks english and can thus guide us through our quest to learn. so what does this all mean? when we went scrounging through the streets of copacabana for some food this evening...totally groggy, totally starving (i ate a granola bar on the plane at 4 am EST)...we couldn't read a single thing on any menu. of any restaurant we could afford, anyway. or if we could, it was accompanied by other, even MORE ... read more
