Rio de Janeiro, Brazil This was to be a one of the highlights of our trip and it did not disappoint. WOW from the moment we opened the curtains as we entered the harbour to Rio de Janeiro till we returned to the ship at just after nine at night was a day to remember. Rio de Janeiro is one of the most beautiful harbour cities in the world , its rich backdrop of mountains, sandy beaches, lush vegetation and the South Atlantic Ocean form a dramatic vista in a league of its own. We sailed in at just before 7am and were greeted firstly with views of Corcavado (Christ the Redeemer) followed by the famous Copacabana beach and just for good measure the famous Sugar Loaf Mountain. And we hadn't even had breakfast!!! Coupled with ... read more

?... read more

Back again to my absolute favourite place for a trip! Just love everything about this place, restores the faith! Got to hotel about 9pm on the first night and just hit the local beach hut for a few caprihana nightcaps. Couple of the girls hadn't been here before so they got introduced to the drink. It is absolutely lethal as just pure alcohol, delicious! I only had three of the caprihana's and the head was bit tender next morning! We get free breakfast now at hotel, so that sorted me out. It's a buffet breakfast, think managed about three plates of food! Love free grub! Should keep me going until dinner. The day was spent bronzing on the beach and did some bodyboarding too. Waves were wild. Got some of the Acai drink from a beach ... read more

Back to one of my favourite places in the world - Rio! Got 2 nights here. The first spent at one of the beach shacks across the road on the caprihana's! Only about 2 pounds for one and they are lethal! Pure alcohol and sugar, love them. Although meant that the next day I was bit fragile so spent the day chilling on Barra Beach. Usually like to body board here but the waves were insane and there were signs everywhere not to go into the sea so decided best not too. The beach offers lots of interesting things to buy such a block of halumi cheese which is grilled on the spot. I just went with some corn on the cob and bought a little red bikini from the bikini man and his array of ... read more

We received a warm welcome upon arrival to Rio de Janeiro. Erika, an amiga from my Barcelona days, came to pick us up and drove us back to her mom´s apartment, where she set us up in her own room while she would sleep in her sister´s room. Her mom fixed us some leftover dinner of frutas del mar and rice, and we were told to make ourselves at home and help ourselves to anything in the fridge. Amazing hospitality, and we thanked them profusely. The next morning we were up by 7, and out the door by 8 to drive to a small locals beach down the coast 45 minutes. But as it was Carnaval and the majority of people were on vacation from work, the normally exclusive local surfer beach was packed with people ... read more

After the Galapagos Islands we went back to Rio de Janeiro to buy a car. We all ready applied for our CPF number in Soa Paulo one months before. We bought a 1997 Jeep Cherokee with 190 hp, that should get us across the Andes! Buying a car and registering it in our name took a lot of effort and three weeks of our time. But if you hang in there you will get the benefit in the end. This is the process of buying a car in Brazil: 1. Apply for the CPF number, this is a social security number. This is done at the Receita Federal in the major cities, http://www.receita.fazenda.gov.br/aplicacoes/ATCTA/CPF/default.htm Take you birth certificate, passport and pp copy. After two days you will get the number on a piece of paper. The official ... read more

A Cidade Maravilhosa! (That means "The Marvelous City" in Portuguese). Even though it's been kind of gray and rainy during my visit to Rio de Janeiro, I think the city merits its nickname. I've had a blast walking all around Rio for the last few days with my own personal guide (Rodolpho) and learning my way around its numerous neighborhoods. It's a beautiful city, with verdant hills rising dramatically above the sea that break up the landscape and gorgeous beaches below that line the edge of the city. Rio lies around the Baia de Guanabara (a bay near the southern end of Brazil) and it also has a beautiful lagoon ("lagoa") that sits slightly to the south of the bay. The result of all the coastline and hills is a city that's broken into distinct neighborhoods, ... read more

Jeremiah and I took a Jeep tour through the largest favela in Rio. These shanti towns are completely self-sustaining aside from government trash and sewage services. The drug lords live at the top and control the entire community. They are seen more as businessmen than criminals and have far more respect from the people than the local police. The tour is completely safe and sanctioned by the drug lords so that tourists can see the truth about this way of life. They want outsiders to know that their conditions are very bad, but that the people are vibrant and retain dignity despite being ignored and shoved under the rug by the government. These towns are erected by the people in any space available and the electricity is cyphoned from surrounding businesses and communities. This favela houses ... read more
