After a lovely time at Iguazu falls, I debated whether to go back to Rio for my final week or go to Buenos Aires. I'd gotten into travelling mode and was thinking about hitting a few more countries within 1 week. I decided it was a silly idea and flew back to Rio instead. I returned to the hostel I stayed in originally and received a good discount for a room to myself. I actually had the whole hostel to myself, the place still being deserted. Not a lot going on outside either and even my favourite cafe had shut down for renovation. After 2 days I decided it was time to leave again ... I was getting lonely. Previously when I travelled from Rio to Parati I missed the famous stop-off island 'Ilha Grande' and ... read more

So where did we leave you??....Ah yes, Sao Paulo bus station.... The 6hr bus ride was pretty uneventful, and bleary eyed we arrived at Rio de Janeiro station at 3am, found a bench and curled up to catch a few more z´s.....we´re back into the swing of things again now (after our cushy month in New Zealand) and have now regained the ability to sleep anywhere with any amount of noise around us! A couple of hours later our alarm woke us and we trundled off, with our fingers crossed, to find a bus to Arraila do Cabo. What do you know, only 4 seats left on the 5.45am bus, and none for the rest of the day! We hoped on, watched a beautiful sunrise over Rio and then slept for the rest of the journey! ... read more

Well hello there! We are still aclimatizing to the heat and the madness of this place... got a bit over confident today õn the beach and ended up looking like streaky bacon! wont be doing that again.... We arrived last tuesday in rio and stayed for 2 days, we didnt see much of the city but what we did see was incredible. the most beautifully situated city we´d ever seen. Our hostel, Lemon spirit, was lovely... we got put right on the top the building with our own roof terrace and a lovely view over Leblon. it was only 1 block from the beach... heaven! but also very hot and stuffy and busy so thats why we´ve missioned 3 hours up the coast to a place called Praia de Pero, which is a small holiday town ... read more

The person who was subletting my apartment has found someone to replace her for the final month of the agreement, so the world tour continues. Instead of returning to Geneva early, I'll be going to Argentina after all, although it's very unlikely that I'll retrace my steps toward Bolivia.... read more

Being in Brazil is like being in a country full of Fernando Botero's work come to life: plenty of amazingly big, fat people. And at the seaside they're not reticent about putting it all on display. Sides of beef in bikinis and speedos. Clearly, this is informed by a point of view that values a slim figure and health and it's just an observation; it's not meant pejoratively. But it's beach life, it's their beach and they grew up beside it or have earned a vacation here and deserve it. Brazilians come in an vast range of shapes, sizes and colours and it's here that you see the genetic presence of Africans more than elsewhere in South America. Brazil is a mixture of African, European and indigenous, with the emphasis on the first two. The mixture ... read more

Polly: Had the most awesome day yesterday. Ross & I went out on a boat around the neighboring islands and went diving and snorkelling. The weather was hot and sunny, the winds were calm and the visibility was great. I was really nervous just before as I hadn´t dived for yonks but after about 30 seconds of very unproductive, rapid breathing I chilled out and sunk to the bottom. After about 10 minutes I´d stopped thinking about it and just loved it. The highlight was the amount of turtles. Some were just chilling on the sea bed, whilst others swam about, not really bothered by us. There was one massive one, who I swam along with for ages. I also saw a humungous crab and a huge lobster, both down cracks, clearly experts of hiding from ... read more
