The show must go on, despite the fact one of our heroes bites the dust for 5 days with a most unfortunate eye injury! As a result of this incapacitation, some of this blog will be skimmed over and only vague second hand accounts of events be given. However, much fun was had post injury, much fun indeed (and no references to LOST this time). In trying to escape the island (or in reality leave of our own free will via boat) a series of unfortunate events did befall me. It was another glorious day, as does befit such a place, and then I go and scratch my eye inadvertently while adjusting my cap. Cue, pain and temporary, monocular vision! One the rather choopy boat crossing back to the mainland the vision began to clear up. ... read more

For all the beach bums out there, you´´ll be turning a darker shade of green when you read this. We have just finished exploring the southern parts of Brazil, and this is what we can say about it: Our first port of call was Florianopolis, or as all the locals call it, Floripa. There is really only one thing to do there and that is go to the beach. And once you have visited the beach, you move on to another beach. And then another. So, when it rains, issues arise (as you will read about later). As we cannot consider ourselves rotisserie kind of people (turning round and round to roast yourself evenly), we actually had to find something to do. We took off on a short hike over one big hill to a relatively ... read more

The Ilha do Mel is situated at the mouth of the Paranaguá bay. What is special about it is that it is a preserved island, with most of it territory an ecological preserve. The inhabitants live in two 'villages', Nova Brasilia and Encantadas. There are neither roads nor cars on the island. To go from Brasilia to Encantadas one can walk by the beach (but only at low tide) or by boat. The number of people allowed on the island is limited to 5,000. In high season visitors need to book in advance to make sure they are allowed to travel. An electronic board announces the number of free places at the embarkation point where a kind of immigration office is making sure the rules are applied. It takes half an hour to reach Brasilia from ... read more

Currently on an island called Ilha Do Mel, 12 hours south west of Rio. Its raining so i thought i´d take 10 mins to blog about a VERY important experience i encountered in Rio that i forgot to mention in my Rio blog...and also to give Brazil some credit following my bashing about how bad the food can be here........... in Brazil they have pay per kilo restaurants! Now we´re talking.....one hungover day in Rio , Nat and i stumbled across a restaurant that we thought was all you can eat. As a massive fan of all you can eats (I kept Pizza Hut lunch buffet in business through my university years) there was no doubting it ws going to be good feed. But this wasnt just any buffet...its a smorgasboard of food amazingness! Steak, fish, ... read more

Our pursuit of deserted beaches was leading us to the island of Ilha do Mel, which in turn meant we had to pass through the city of Curitiba. This city wasn't a bad place but it came across as very forgettable. Tracy and I both thought it reminded us of Luton, with its shopping arcades full of discount shops and cheap chemists. Just as Luton has great countryside and limestone hills out of town, so Curitiba has Villa Velha national park. The park is in a limestone area and has strange columns raising to the skies and sink holes that disappear into the ground. It made for an interesting afternoon's distraction and got us out of town. We left Curitiba by train which we thought was going to be a wonderful journey through forests and take ... read more

After an overnight bus ride down to Curitiba and a two hour bus down to pontal do sul we took a little boat out to the island to see the first real sun in the Brazil part of our trip. The island has no cars and has a protected northern end which Lachlan is convinced contains some kind of top secret military base, due to the very buff perk rangers on the island and big wire fences, that or the womb of the earth, i cant remember which he decided. Anyway because of our many acquired souveneirs the three and a half kilometer hike down the beach to our hostel was quite a struggle, myself acquiring a couple of blisters. Our bags weigh about 44 kilograms between them. Our pousada was home to a lovely woman ... read more

Deuxieme halte, Ilha do mel.

Apologies for lack of updates, so far the only computers we have been able to access seem to date back to the dark ages, hence lack of photos too, so as a result this may be rather long.... We are currently on a little island east of Parangua in Brazil and have come across the only decent computer. So, from our last couple of days in Argentina we visited a small town called Tigre about 20Km from Buenos Aires. In Argentina this is a weekend destination built on a riverway and has small houses on stilts, we caught a little boat which took us deeper into the deltas. Then we of course went to the Argentina vs Paraguay game which was good........but it rained all through the match and was only about 5 degrees.......so we were ... read more
