Ever since having seen it on 'Megastructures' on the Discovery Channel I always thought that the Itaipu Dam would be a pretty awesome place to visit. I never thought I would ever get there but today I was fortunate enough to have the chance. Lets be serious for a moment here, it is no Karapiro, but its not too shabby. A few of us woke up earlier than the rest this morning to go and visit the dam. The others were heading to Paraguay for the day to go shopping and that didn't interest me all that much so I chose not to go. I can however tick Paraguay off as a place that I have been as one side of the dam is Brazil and the other Paraguay. It is quite odd actually. There is ... read more

If you are crossing the border between Brazil and Argentina then it is necessary to visit the Iguacu falls, they are spectacular. As we were leaving Brazil (Bonito) and destined for Argentina we did the Brazilian side first. This was an over night bus but be warned that it is necessary to change buses twice, of course we were fast asleep until the bus driver came up calling our names, (He knew from our luggage tags) telling us we had to get off and get another bus, which was lucky for us sleeping beauties. The final bus terminates at the Foz do Iguacu bus station this is not a station you want to hang around so we got on the local bus that brings you directly to the falls. In the tourist centre at the falls, ... read more

Second Stop: Iguazu Falls, Brazil. Highlights: Stayed at a 4 star resort and learned a valuable lesson: Never book tours through your hotel in South America! They sold us on some insanely expensive package that included a personal driver/escort...I felt like a senior citizen. If you´re imagining us being in some remote part of Brazil and hiking through deep forest, stop right there. They had a nice ticket station, trails, uniformed men in jeeps and even a tour train to take us up to the falls. I thought I was at Disneyland. Took an awesome boat tour up the river channel against the current to view the falls and even got under parts of the falls. Awesome! ... read more

Hello!! :o) Sorry for the delay (again!!) - havent had much internet access the last few days but will make up for it now!! :o) We left Sao Paulo on Tuesday afternoon and took the bus up to Foz do Iguazu! The bus was really nice - the seats were huge and really comfy so was really quite looking forward to the journey and getting to relax and sleep until.... the bus broke down!! twice!! :o( I had an incling it was going to happen because just before we broke down the bus started to smelly funny.... of petrol or something and I joked that the engine had blown up, then 2 seconds later we pulled over! Obviously all the men got off and crowded round the engine rubbing their chins and all pretending they knew ... read more

Next stop was Iguazu Falls, which started with another full day of traveling. Foz do Iguacu is a really cool small town in southern Brazil on the boarder of Argentina and Paraguay. Like Cusco, it is another really touristy city and another place where we had only budgeted a couple days. However, this worked out since two days of viewing the falls was more than enough. It was recommended that you view the falls from both the Argentina and Brazil sides. In all, there are more than 275 waterfalls and some of the larger ones are up to 270 ft high. The first day we viewed the Argentina side which was cool because you get right up next to many of the falls and you also get a great view from the top of the largest ... read more

From Paraty we headed by bus to Foz do Iguaçu, it was a 22 hour journey which took us via Sao Paulo, where we stopped for 3 hours. As we arrived after dark, we only had enough time to eat dinner in the station, so we really didn´t see much of the city. When we finally made it into Foz the next morning, the town was really not what we expected... we passed Pizza Hut and McDonald's on the way in, and it really was a city not the small little town we imagined! Iguaçu Falls are the largest falls in the world with over 275 waterfalls at any given time and can either be viewed from the Brazilian side or the Argentina side. We first went to the Brazilian side which gave a fantastic view ... read more

Hugh wanted a separate entry for the Brazilian side of the falls so that we get the whole of Brazil coloured in on our trip map! (H - well we did actually make it Brazil (if only for part of a day) and have the passport stamps to prove it!) We had arranged with the taxi driver from the airport to be taken to the Brazilian side of the falls which turned out to save a lot of time and was very valuable for getting through the border. Unfortunately it was a grey morning...even more unfortunately it started to rain later in the morning and of course H's waterproofs were somewhere lost in the great airline luggage black hole so he ended up acquiring a particularly fetching white plastic mac to keep himself dry. It seems ... read more

Day 225 - Friday 2 May As I've seen pretty much everything there is to see on the Argentinian side of the border Im going to cross over to the brazilian side. According to the Lonely Planet its a lot more lively. Its only a 30 minute bus ride from Puerto Iguazu on the Argentianian side to Foz de Iguacu on the Brazilain side and by lunchtime I'd arrived. I dropped my bags off at the hostel and went out to get lunch and have a look around the town centre. To be honest its just like any other poor run down town you see all over the world, and I found it rather dull and boring. Apart from seeing the falls from the Brazilian side of the river (something i've now decided not to see), ... read more

Hi Our last day in Foz. We woke up and headed to a really nice bird park. They have a lot of different species of birds and stuff, everything from butterflies to eagles. They are in big bird houses, and some of them you can even enter and walk among the birds. Parrots in all colours and sizes, really curious and funny (and for some, a little scary). It took all of Rosa's courage to enter the macaw house, those very intelligent parrots are great entertainment! One even managed to sneak up behind Rosa and scare her (see photos). It is sad to know that some of the species have been driven to near-extinction by forest clearing and illegal hunting/capturing. I cannot in any way understand why someone would want to buy those animals on the ... read more

Hi everybody! So, day two at Foz. We headed for the national park early in the morning. Located on the Brazil/Argentina border, Iguazu Falls are considered to be the second largest in the world, only Victoria Falls are bigger. Most of the waterfalls are placed on the Argentinan side, but From the Brazilian side the view is supposed to be better. Anyways, with my precious "single entry" working visa, we decided not to go to the Argentinan side. When we came there we started by taking a ride through the jungle for a few kilometers, then a 600 meters "jungle hike" on a paved path down to the river. From there, a boat ride on a speedboat about 4 km up the river to the falls. This is really the way to experience the magnificent features ... read more
