All the thanks in the world go to Mark for planning out my short weeks stay in Brasil. I reflected on my time there as having shown me the different aspects to what the country was like, given the time I had to see it. Rio was a traditional tourist town, showing the exterior side of Brazilian life. From the Carioca (Muscle Beach-ish) mentality to the glimpses of the favelas. Brasilia showed me a different take on a capital city, a rather surprising lack of security from what we have in Washington DC, yet it seemed more secure. I also had a glimpse into family life and the open arms of the Brazilian Culture. Ouro Preto showed me the spirituality of the people, the simplicity and happiness of a town full of hills anyone else would ... read more

So I have been here for one month as of today, but it seems like much longer. The days of work meetings and any responsibility beyond feeding myself seems as foreign to me as grilled chicken hearts do to you (and they are quite tasty). I have started Portuguese classes at a University here and am shocked how hard it is to get back into the swing of school. But since it is crucial that I learn this language I have some motivation. Everyday is a constant reminder that I need to learn and learn fast, especially when you find yourself in a Favela because you did not understand a word of the directions some guy gave you. My classmates are all pretty cool. We went on a school field trip to a farm where ... read more

Well I finally made it to Brazil. The trip from SF to Belo Horizonte was 35 hours long spread over 4 flights and 13 hours of layovers, but I should not complain, it is not like I don't have the time. I flew into Sao Paulo first and was amazed by the size of the city. They say it is big, but I could not imagine that big. Massive buildings litter the city as far as the eye can see. I met an old friend at the airport and he took me to his house for the nine hours layover until my next flight. The city was not nearly as bad as I expected. Going from one end of the city can take a lot of time as they do not have massive freeways as we ... read more

Hi all from the weary travelers. We are back in Belo Horizonte after an interesting trip to Diamantina. It is a very old city , much older than Port Arthur, with tiny winding cobblestone street and thousands of little shops - all shopped out. . The Futsal games in Diamantina were very exciting - packed stadium, they played the National anthem before the game and lots of ´´Aussie Aussie Aussie''. Our girls won one match, the boys are having good games but the standard here is very high. These kids have been playing Futsal since they could walk. Jord has been playing really well - we are very proud of him. Our guides are fabulous, lots of joking, singing and carrying on in the bus. We will never forget them. We went to a National League ... read more

After arriving at the Bris airport at around 5am on Friday 4th and collecting our pass ports and some gear and we finally got on the plane direct to Sydney and then onto Santiago, that’s we thought. Some time after we sat on the plane we were informed we would be landing in Auckland NZ for a stop over of one hour. The trip to Auckland was fine. We all had to leave the plane for some reason for the 1 hour, unable to leave the air port. We are now ready for the big one, off we go, 13hrs later we arrived in Santiago, a 2 hr stop over or that’s what we thought, 6 hours later with no money because we were unable to use our card we are off again, only to be ... read more

After more then 4 months here in Belo Horizonte, I'm departing. In due course, I´ve spent the past days saying my goodbyes - and realizing exactly how many people I know here. My work has brought me into contact with a huge number of people as I found myself working with some 200 children. Perhaps it speaks to the hospitality of the Brazilians, or perhaps it´s just my good luck that I´ve had the opporunity to meet so many fascinating people. But let's rewind. A quick summary of "what I did on my summer vacation." I arrived in Brazil without any idea of what I would be doing here. In fact, I only came here because I knew people and I had some familiarity with the language (the deciding moment was talking with Randy at Berlex ... read more

This was my last week playing Capoeira and I´m a little sad now that it´s finished. My last two days were amazing... on wednesday after class we walked to this little lake near by to have a jogo. It was fantastic!! This is what it´s all about... we were outside under the full moon singing songs and playing capoeira. Across the lake you could see the favela lit up by the lights and a couple people from there came out to play with us and they were really good. Guilherme was taking pictures and at the end we had a picture of everyone in my class. Thursday was my last day, we had a class and then a jogo afterwards. At the end, Guto said some nice things about me and everyone clapped their for me. ... read more
