Bonito is experiencing an Eco-tourism boom, in the south of Matto Grosso do Sul - it has an extraordinary diversity of natural wonders, in a relatively compact area. Blessed with caves, waterfalls, crystal clear rivers, forested hills all within a 50km radius - a very small distance in Brazilian terms - Bonito is riding the eco-tourism wave very well. I travelled directly from a few days in the wet-lands of the Pantanal to the Bonito Eco-tourism Hostel - the only Hostel (HI affiliated) in the area. My aims - rappel and then dive the abyss, snorkel in the crystal clear "Rio da Prata" - with dorados, pacu and many other species of Brazilian river fish - anything else would be a bonus. March is the low season - I had been worried about an influx of ... read more

The photos might look tropical, but trust me, the water was not as warm and inviting as it looks! The water is crystal clear and so clean because most of it is filtered through aquifers and emerges at the surface at springs... ..But before the fun in Bonito could begin, we had to run the gauntlet of tour operators in Campo Grande, who were trying to sell us a Pantanal Tour (we found out afterwards that you don't even need to pre-book!). We arrived in Campo Grande tired from our epic overnight bus ride, with about an hour to spare for breakfast before boarding the connecting bus to Bonito. One guy in particular chased us and cornered us five times! We eventually checked out what he had to say, and because we had deliberated for so ... read more

Autobus konecne dorazil a nastoupili jsme. Prede mnou sedeli 2 opilci, co se furt roztahovali po sedackach vepredu i vzadu, za mnou zase mala holcicka ... read more

I just came back from 4 days in the Pantanal, the largest wetlands area around. It´s supposed to be the biggest concentration of wildlife as well, but if it is, I didn´t see it. The first day was basically just getting there from Campo Grande (a 5 hour ride, after 16 hours from Iguazu). The pousada (lodge) is pretty nice, built on stilts, which is a good thing because the whole Pantanal is flooded at the moment. The next day we went on a car safari (driving along the only road in the Pantanal, which is a dirt road) and seeing animals, then walking (sometime into the water) and not seeing much animals. We saw most of the animals from the car, hardly any during our walk. You can see most of the animals we saw ... read more

Today I went snorkeling near Bonito, in Rio Formoso. I saw some nice fish, snorkeled through some rapids, and had a good time. Then I went to the municipal pool, which is just another section of the same river, and saw some more fish, and some capuchins (monkeys) on the trees nearby. They made me miss the animal refuge in Bolivia a little, but I'll get over it. There are no photos, because my camera doesn't like water. Last night, I went to a nice restaurant, which serves meat of Pantanal animals. I had capybara (very good, spicy), wild pig (nice, similar to pork) and cayman (tastes like fish, i didn't like it). It's fun eating strange animals, but I think I miss Argentinian beef. Tomorrow I'm going to Sao Paulo, to visit the main academy ... read more

On The Road We are finally on our way, travelling on a wonderfully yellow truck called Swampy and getting to know each other on our 10 week Budget Expeditions adventure. This truck, along with the tents it is carrying, will be our home for this whole time across South America. The bus is incredible huge with lots of leg room and two table areas at the front of the bus as well as a library at the back. We also have a sound system which we can connect up to our iPod's and MP3's, though a tv where we could watch films would be very useful for the long drive days! We left Rio de Janeiro fairly early and had a short (yes it is short) 5 hr journey to our first stop, a beautiful little ... read more

Paraguay, Asuncion, and the lovely blue hotel in a sweltering Concepcion are left behind. Bonito, Brasil lies ahead. The trip across the border was tedious. At one point on the way to Bonito we first past and then retraced our steps to go to China Shopping. This was a HUGE, really HUGE store that sold everything at outrageous prices … in dollars! Also found in the complex was buffet food sold by the kilo. On offer were vegetables, vegetables and vegetables. Since my system shut down in Asunción, meat has not been on the menu. When everyone had satisfied their appetite for food and shopping we got back on the bus/truck and continued on our way to Bonito. The shortest route was not taken. It was left unclear whether the reason was road condition or ... read more

So we spent the night in the hotel in anticipation of a 9AM bus to Bonito the next morning. The laundromat didn´t open at 8 as planned, but we still were able to get the laundry, and we also caught a bus at 11AM with a very efficient bus company, Cruzero Do Sul - we arrived in Bonito exactly when we were supposed to. And Carlos, the driver of the Hostel picked us up as soon as we arrived. But the hostel turned out to be three blocks from the main road, not three blocks from the town as Israel, the guy at the Campo Grande hostel who had booked our reservation indicated. The town was a good 2km away. We arrived in town at 4, tired and hungry, and unable to truly satisfy our hunger, ... read more

Dec 25th-26th: We left the Pantanal and after a 5 hours bus trip down a dirt road we are now in Bonito which is a cute little town with pristine spring fed rivers. We spent Christmas here and went to dinner with our German friends whose names allude us. Today we went snorkelling down a river with crystal clear water and an abundance of fish life. What we plan to do tomorrow could be perhaps the pinnacle of our trip, we are heading to Paraquay home of the contraband and every fake good imagineable. They have Dolcy and Gabbany, Diezel, Addiddiddas, Nikee, Prady, Tippany, DVD´s , perfumes etc. It´s a cheap skates Mecca, which is why I´m particularly excited. I plan to buy alot of quality merchandise. Anyway that´s my contribution for the next few weeks. ... read more
