Thankfully the remainder of our trip into the historical gold mining town of Ouro Preto was less eventful. The bus station is situated a short walk from the town square, Praça Tiradentes, which faces a beautiful old museum. Hopping off the bus we sought out the tourist information booth and a very helpful young man was only too willing to give us a hand selecting a suitable hotel. He went through many providing commentary as to price and whether he thought we should stay there. His advice was to stay at the Grande Hotel in the town centre which was “a very good price” at 111R per night. Indeed, it is one of the “better” hotels if you are into crap 1970’s style and design. Oddly the hotel was designed by Oscar Niemeyer (Brasil’s most famous ... read more

Saludos a todos! I hope all is well where ever you guys are at. The travels have been going well. Still in Brazil. After Sao Luis, we decided to visit some national parks and do some sightseeing and swimming. We had enough of big cities....for now at least. Below is a summary of the towns we visited. Sao Luis: So, Homer and I are sitting at a local bar/restaurant. We're outside on the sidewalk where tables are set up. Drinking some brews....checking out the scene and people watching. A waiter comes up and hands Homer a note. The note was in Portuguese, but it basically said, "Hey, everything good?", signed with the initials J.R. Homer started glowing. He was speechless. Someone told the waiter to hand Homer the note. There was people all around us. We ... read more

Monday, Jan 13. The town of Bonito is fairly surrounded by clear water rivers, springs, waterfalls and other similar tourist attractions catering to trekkers and “eco tourists.” Today we traveled about 50 miles South of Bonito to snorkel and swim in the Rio da Prata river. This attraction, owned by a local “farmer” who owns about 3000 acres, has a well developed facility catering to visitors, with a snack bar and curio shop, picnic facilities, and well developed trails to and from the river. Sunscreen and bug repellent are not allowed, as they may contaminate the water, and the guide told us that the government strictly regulates the number of visitors daily and inspects frequently to insure that the ecology is maintained in its pristine condition. Fortunately for us we arrived in a very dry period, ... read more

On the 14th I left the Pantanal and arrived in Bonito in the evening. In my previous entry I talk about the bad standard of services in Bolivia but here we fall into the opposite extreme. Everything is so neat and organised that it feels like being in a holiday resort. You can only do activities on an organised tour where they pick you up at the hostel and guide you all the way and our hostel even has a swimming pool. It's okay for a few days - I enjoyed visiting a cave, snorkelling and what was sold to me as rafting and turned out to be going on a boat and throw water to other boats with a bucket - but then I feel the urge to leave. The good thing about my stay ... read more

So...I can now confirm that a 14 hour overnight bus is not particularly pleasant...nor the most sleep-inducing experience!....in fact it´s pretty uncomfortable and smells wierd... and for some unknown reason there seems to be a speed bump every 10 metres in brazil....but in good news i survived and arrived at the iguassu falls... the iguassa falls were spectacular....much discussion was had amongst the group about whether they were the world´s tallest, widest, largest, wettest etc or none of the above...in the end it was decided that they were definitely the biggest, widest and wettest waterfalls we had seen this week... we went the the brazilian side first (the falls and river represent the borders between brazil, argentina and paraguay)...which was very impressive...altho populated by what i assumed was the brazilian w.i.... after that we went back ... read more

I arrivied in Bonito, Brasil and decided to go snorkling in the Rio de Prata. Here are some pictures from snorkling in the Rio de Prata. The crazy thing is after a truck ride you have to hike in your wetsuit for 45 minutes through the jungle to get to the entry point of the Rio de Prata. We spent about two hours snorkling down the river which was like snorkling in an aquarium. It was unbelievable that there was so much colorful fish life in a fresh water river. If you find yourself in Bonito, Brasil then head over and go snorkling on the Rio de Prata.... read more

We needed to make our way from Brazil to Bolivia and so we decided stop somewhere in the Pantanal before crossing the border at Corumba. On reading about the Pantanal we discovered that most tours were 3/4 days which was time we simply didn't have. Instead we discovered a lovely town close to the Pantanal and Corumba called Bonito. Bonito is a small, pretty town which is famous for crystalline water snorkeling and rappelling. We stayed in a lovely hostel in the center of town which helped us organize tours, etc. Because we only had 1 full day to spend in Bonito we decided to go with the recommendation of the hostel and we booked the rappelling tour for the following day. The recommendation was spot-on!!! The rappelling tour involves absailing 74 metres into an underground ... read more

Wednesday 9th April Wake really early as is a lot of banging around in the space - retaliation for last night I think - so childish! Give up and get showered/dressed. Ater breakfast get Levy to finish off my tattoo so doesn't just look like someone has written on my arm! We're taken back to the hotel to meet the minibus again... With Levy stopping to catch an armadillo en route! We stop for lunch at Brazilian buffet BBQ (buffet seems to be the preferred style) in Miranda, before arriving in Bonito in the early afternoon. Seems like a nice quiet place... Find the internet café before we meet up for dinner. Lila no great suggestions so we pick one. My Maracuya (passion fruit) milkshakes are great and food OK so I'm happy... Especially when go ... read more

So when we last left you we were about to make our way from La Paz Bolivia to Bonito Brazil.... we had taken the smart option (or wussed out depending on your point of view) and decided to fly to the border and cut out about 48hrs of bus travel. Monday started early with a 5:30 pick up at our hotel the girl from the travel agent who booked our flights escorted us to the airport - we´re not quite sure why but we´ve given up trying to work out why over here, it´s easier just to accept. The flight to Santa Cruz and then the flight to Puerto Suarez were uneventful. Then it was a taxi ride to the border (i´m sure we paid too much) and checked out of Boliva. The Lonely planet had ... read more
