We got into Bonito too late to do much on the first night. So after purchasing some new thongs and buying some water we headed back to the hostel for an early night. It turns out that this was our first alcohol free day of the trip. Probably my first day not having a beer in quite a while. Damn England. Once we managed to drag our assess out of bed we were determined to get the most out of Bonito. So we headed downtown to one of the many tourist offices to see what we could book for the day. It turns out that we couldn't book too much but the biggest problem was that anything we wanted to book costs and arm and a leg. Since being in Brazil I've been surprised by the ... read more

Bonito At Puerto Iguazu I had the pleasure of bumping into a couple of American girls for the third time in the trip (first in Chiloe, then in Ushuaia, and now in Iguazu). We even went to the falls on the same day. So when I found out that they were heading to the much-talked-about Bonito, I tagged along. They had left earlier but I managed to catch them in the nick of time at Foz de Iguaçu (Brazil) and hop onto their same bus. We ended up spending nearly a day traveling to Bonito. For those of you who have never been to Brazil, picture what you would think a typical Brazilian landscape looks like. The resulting image is probably the landscape surrounding Bonito: lush vegetation, beautiful blue skies, sparse jungle, lots of cows (the ... read more

Keeping it brief as i'm typing this on my phone via wifi. Lots to tell, can't wait to get to a pc! Last night was a little surreal - the bus drove for an hour and a half on dirt roads to get to Bonito, but the town is actually really cool. Met a couple of folks who are doing this properly - over a year in south america, now that's some real self development time! Went tombstoning in one of the local rivers today and got obscene amounts of water up my nose. The platform was about 5m above the river and scared the bejesus out of me, so I did it 3 times. Right, off to catch some dinner!... read more

Bonito is a small 1 street town which is geared up to the tourists but it is still pretty nice. As we are in the low season it was like a ghost town. We booked on a trip snorkelling which takes you 2.5km down a crystal clear river and has lots of colourful fish. After a short truck ride there was a 40 minute trek through the wilderness and we saw a Capuchin monkey playing around and some of the guys ate termites which apparently tasted like peanuts! The current was strong in the river so you didn´t need to swim at all ' just let the current take you down the river at a very nice pace. I am so glad for my waterproof camera in situations like this and i got some good photos ... read more

Everybody we've met said we must go to Bonito - so we backtracked a couple of hundred km to do it, was the right choice. The main attractions are the rivers which are crystal clear and full of fish. We chose the Rio Sucuri - it was awesome. You're kitted out with wetsuit, mask and snorkel then dropped into the river near it's source, then you drift downstream for ~ an hour, about 2km, before they take you back out for a great lunch. We saw all sorts of fish, birds, more monkeys - fantastic. Unfortunately no photo's but for us another unforgettable experience. ... read more

Have to drop by the Bambu hostel in Puerto iguassu to pick up my bus ticket for Campo Grande, after getting dropped off at the Brazil customs i tried to get a bus quickly but the 1st bus that came by refuse to take me, I was in the bus already and the driver wanted me out, he said my voucher is for another bus, I offered to pay the fare but he said no, then the women in the bus started telling me I should go to customs first, i did that already, then they said take another bus, i said I wanted to take this one! Finally exhausted and frustrated i got off and the driver explained that he is prohibited from taking passengers as he does not issue tickets stubs, ok so after ... read more

The bus ride into Bonito from the Patanal took about 4 and a half hours but i didn’t mind. I left around 3:30pm and very soon it was dark and i spent the ride gazing at the thousands of stars in the sky. The sky was so clear that for the first time in my life i could see stars coming all the way down the horizon almost touching the earth. Like a canopy or blanket they covered the entire sky, it was so amazing and it made me feel small and lucky to be in this wonderful world of mystery and surprise. As I approached the terminal i got that same uneasy feeling of not wanting the safety and ease of the bus ride to ever end. I was supposed to be staying at a ... read more

Firstly, everyone stop panicking, I didn't fall foul of the Brazilian branch of the mafia. As if I did, I wouldn't be here writing this would I? It's just a title. Perhaps I should change it. Down to business then. So, from the Pantanal all of our group except for Mack, who swanned off to Rio, got on a bus to Bonito, which duly arrived about four hours later. Bonito has become one of Brazil's main centres for Ecotourism, and thus is filled with rather large statues of fish and the such. Quite bizarre. It is also jolly expensive. So why had I come to this expensive town? After all, Stewart and the word expensive are usually found at opposite ends of the dictionary (pedants, yes I do realise that Stewart is a proper noun, and ... read more
