Bahia Travel Blogs

Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

Mad parties all the time, dancing everywhere, huge Blockos, music all the time, muggings and pickpocketing everywhere, and a beer vendor never more than 10 metres from you. * I think I killed my liver... * Ventured to the local Salvador beaches, including an island beach. The sleepless party like f´ing crazy version: Hard to know where to start for this entry.. OK, maybe the hostel, Nega Maluca, wicked hostel =) Very comfoortable, good owner, good workers, good crowd. I got a dorm bed in a dark quiet corner [View Full Entry]

Now that I have got a translation gig in Lençóis (lovely little town in the centre of Bahia) and free accomodation, I can explore the surrounding Chapada Diamantina National Park. The pictures here are of a place called Pratinha, about 70km from town, deep in the park (but I got a lift off a couple of Brazilian tourists). It has lovely (but cool) clear waters within which you can snorkel with the many fish that live there, and has a network of caves that you can visit with a snorkel, a bit of light (it's 100% in there otherwise) and a [View Full Entry]

Damn the water was cold there!

It would have been nice to have stayed here for a few days but we were running out of time so done it as a day trip instead. The boat trip there and back is not nice, so be warned! Loads of people threw up. I felt a little sea sick on the way, so had a really nice mixed seafood grill on the beach and slept the whole journey back! The island itself was pretty amazing, it had about 3-4 different beaches and they were paradise. [View Full Entry]

SALVADOR Lonely Planet's introduction to Salvador reads: “If you're going to get robbed in Brazil, Salvador is likely to be the place.” Hmmm. Although, it's supposed to be THEE cultural capital of Brazil, oozing with a vibrance and energy seldom found on Earth. The reason: Salvador is inhabited with almost nothing but descendants of the Portuguese slave trade, who were treated especially harshly. After reading about the history of Brazil, and the injustices caused by the Portuguese, it made the Spanish Conquistadors seem like choir boys. The street next to our [View Full Entry]

Yesterday, I arrived at the pousada in Lençóis. As I walked around the garden, this is what I saw... PS: my camera is really not ideal for these kinds of pictures, but I did my best. PS2: The first computer I used to upload my photos was too long, and then the website crashed, so I feel really stupid writing this for the third time... [View Full Entry]

Carnaval de Bahia South America » Brazil » Bahia » Lençóis
Further apologies for the lack of news, but last week was carnaval, and that is in Brazil an excuse for absolutely anything. Salvador carnaval is different from the stereotype of the Brazilian samba folly that is generally seen from outside the country. Here, there is almost no samba. Instead, they have Trios Eletricos. The concept started in the 1940s' when two musicians, Dodó and Osmar, got the idea of putting a couple of loudspeakers on an old Ford 1929 car, and playing into them. The idea became an instant success, and the trios grew larger and louder until today, when the [View Full Entry]

After entering Brazil again we went to Bonito; a small town were we relaxed and went snorkeling in the river with hundreds of fish. As we where about to visit the Pantanal we decided to try out some of its inhabitants and had a dinner of Caiman, wild bore and Capybara!!! It was then time to see the animals in the wild, so we went on a 4 day trip into the Pantanal (the largest wetlands area in the world). Here we were able to go Piranha fishing, and within an hour of catching Piranha they had been cooked and were [View Full Entry]

Carnival time! South America » Brazil » Bahia » Salvador
Got to Salvador one night before Carnival after managing to find a fairly reasonably priced ticket. As we didn´t book our carnival tickets in advance on the internet, like we were advised to, we had to go into an official ticket office in Barra Shopping Centre and pay top price. We decided to go for the Timbalada Bloco and the Skol Camarote which were both about 100GBP each. What you then do, once you have your ticket, is jump on the bus to the conference centre and queue for about 3 hours to get your abada, which is like a t-shirt [View Full Entry]

The five men were thrusting their arms out in fighting motions 'dancing' to the rhythm of the music when the police came from behind and clobbered them with their batons. The four men in front writhed with pain while the fifth eluded them, stepping back and closing my path. When the beating had stopped, the police motioned the men to move on. Man number five may have thought he had escaped a beating, but he was wrong. As he passed the military policemen, one of them delivered a blow to the back of the head as a reminder.
