Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

They know how to brighten things up
Given the past few weeks of long bus journeys we decided to treat ourselves and fly from Manaus to Salvador :-) After a few hours on an aeroplane we arrived to Salvador in the wee hours of the morning. Unfortunately the hostel we booked for our first night was really really dirty so we moved first thing the following morning to a more central hostel in the old town called Laranjares (brilliant hostel with fantastic staff and facilities). We spent the next couple of days chilling in Salvador, wandering around the streets and visiting churches and local plazas. Despite the poor [View Full Entry]

Around Salvador

Salvador is a beautiful colonial city looking out over the South Atlantic - cobbled streets and brightly coloured buildings. When I was told back in September I would be going to Carnival I couldn’t believe it, carnival is suppose to be the number one festival and this year I would be a part of it…wow. As time went by I didn’t think too much about it until we went to Brazil, for the first time I experienced their traditional music called Samba in Sao Paulo, and it was love at first sound. Samba is a type of music, played in Portuguese, by 5-20 people performing in a band and they all play together while the whole crowd sing along. [View Full Entry]

WOW South America » Brazil » Bahia » Salvador
Hi all! So I have been here in Brasil for about 5 days now and I am having a blast. The people here are amazing. All of us volunteers live in a three story house in a middle class area of Salvador. The beach is about 10 minutes away by foot and I am there any chance I get! I am about 2 shades darker already... Last night we went to the historic part of Salvador named Pelohrinho. Every Tuesday night the town has live music, dancing and lots of food and drinks!!! 8) We danced the night away, it was [View Full Entry]
