Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

The Salvador Carnival! South America » Brazil » Bahia » Salvador
The Salvador Carnival turned out to be a bigger experience than I expected, a huge party, streets buzzing, dancing, millions of people partying, at times you just couldn't move, everyone was involved and Salvador also lived up to its reputation as a pretty dangerous place. This entry is a long one, but lots of stories to tell......... Carnival is a big event all over Brasil every city, town and village has a parade of some sort, everyone gets involved. The Carnival runs in the days leading upto Lent.....we have Pancake Day they party for a week....... [View Full Entry]

I arrived to Salvador, and took a taxi to the hostel. When I told the taxi driver the address, in San Anotnio region, he was a little bit surprised. I asked him if itīs a good hostel, and he said 'more or less'. At this point I started to worry. The neighborhood looked pretty scary to me - some ruined houses, and the hostel itself didn't look to well. But after checking in, I relaxed because the hostel was run by Israelis, and it was like 'Migdal Bavel' over there - people from all around the world - Australian, Canadian, German, [View Full Entry]

Arrived on the cheap VolGol flight from Rio yesterday. Very civilised. Cheaper than the bus. Quicker, too. The bus takes 26 hours, the jet 1 hour 40 minutes !! It was a no brainer to junp on the jet, although the environmental pollution angle is pretty grim ! I would have preferred to have taken a boat, if there were one. I would not have minded spending a week on a boat...if this could have helped save the planet !! I am here for the Salvador Carnival, also because the weather was not so good down in Rio and the Sao [View Full Entry]

Well unfortunately we were not able to get a cheap flight from Campo Grande to Salvador, and instead opted for 50 hours of buses. The first two, although long, went relatively well, especially since the one from Campo Grande to Brasilia I had no one sitting beside me. The last bus ride, however, from Brasilia to Salvador, was 24 hours of crap. Neither Jord nor I could manage to sleep between the crying babies, the psycho lady that I was sitting beside, and teh bus driver driving through corn fields. For the price of the rides you would think there would [View Full Entry]

BRAZIL!!! Wow, I had the greatest time in Salvador. Before we arrived they briefed us on all the dangers that we could encounter and overly did it in my opinion. I had no trouble but there were definitely some scary moments… (more of that later). In the upper part of the city the architecture was amazing but all of it was really run down. Most of the people on the ship did SAS trips to the Amazon or Rio. Not that many people stayed in Salvador. For the most part I spent my time with my two friends Whitney and Mario. [View Full Entry]

Ship Time South America » Brazil » Bahia » Salvador
Now that we are back on the boat from Puerto Rico, classes have come into full effect! I won’t lie it has been pretty hard getting into the school mode. I do like all of my classes though; I am taking Global Studies, which is a requirement for all students. We have the class everyday and we can either sit in the actual area where the class takes place called the union or we can go to satellite rooms around the ship and watch the class from a TV screen. The union usually fills up with students and it is [View Full Entry]

White is the colour, and we made sure that we dressed for the occasion! Eager to join millions of others heading for the beach, where gifts are offered to the Queen of the sea - Lemanja (as part of one of Salvadors religious ceremonies) we made our way to Itapoa. Making our way to the beach party that we were previously invited to by our brazilian friends, our bus driver (who was being cheered and encouraged by at least 50 people) was accelerating around every corner to the joy of the people singing and dancing on the bus! Madness, but fun! [View Full Entry]

New year!
New year!
New year!

We are pleased to announce that we have made it safely to Brazil! After a more than interesting flight to Sao Paulo from Buenos Aires, where we pretty much feared for our lives after our plane was delayed due to engine failure we have made it to Salvador De Bahia... So, the flight. Our first flight was delayed by 3 hours, and after about 45mins we started to feel more and more concerned after the pilot announced that one of the engines was failing (before take-off!) , not helped by the fact that we had a clear view of the cockpit (not [View Full Entry]

There is so much that I have to say and want to get typed out but I only have so much time since there is only one computer in the small family hotel that I am staying in. Well, yesterday I arrived to Salvador, Bahia and picked up by a friend of my - Carol. She took me into the city to the place where I am staying to drop off my bags. Then Carol and I went out to eat a this beautiful restaurant that looks out over the coast. It had this really great views since it was built [View Full Entry]

Brazil. Get me off this ship! The seas have been quite rocky and we are all ready to be on land! (I have yet to get seasick though. .knock on wood!) Thank goodness too the land we found was BRAZIL! The second stop on this voyage around the world and I have already experienced so much. On Monday morning when we arrived in Salvador we put down our anchor and waited to be allowed to dock. We had to have a health inspection because we had just come from Venezuela and then we all had to go through immigration (passport stamped!) [View Full Entry]
