Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

English Trancoso There are places where, once you set your foot on, you feel like somebody has cast a spell on you. It has happened to us in Trancoso. It might have been the contrast with the hectic Rio, it might be due to the particular moment and the particular way we were feeling while we were there, it might be that if we come back we will not feel the same magic, but, somehow, in that place everything looked perfect. Far away from the civilization, back to the time where the rithm in the human lives was given by the [View Full Entry]

Salvador and All That Jazz Ok peeps. It is that time again. I have finally sort of managed to catch up on my blogging. So after the 11 hour bus ride which was not that bad actually, we finally got to Salvador. Was not sure where exactly to stay. There are two main districts for accomodation. Pelorinho and Barra. I stayed in the historical center which is basically Pelorinho. My first impression of Salvador is that it is really laid back and people sure love to dance. The first night we got there the local school was playing in the streets [View Full Entry]

We are now very close to Salvador, staying on an Island Ilha de Itaparica at a place called Sacatar in a town called Itaparica. To get here from the airport after our 2 hour flight we got on a bus and stayed on there for a VERY scenic trip into Salvador which took at least an hour and a half, went down a VERY cool elevator (Elevador Lacerda) that has at least a 100m drop that leads onto the point where we caught a wooden boat for about 45 mins across the waters to the Island.. from there we jumped into [View Full Entry]

Last Night of Carnaval
Last Night of Carnaval
Getting ruined, I mean 'ready' for Marky, Patife and Fatboy Slim. Take a good look at the twat on the left.
My 28 hour bus ride north left Rio at 9am on the morning after Rolling Stones. My plan had been to stay up all night in the hopes of having a decent kip on the journey. As it happened I'd sneaked into the hostel I'd already checked out of and slipped into a coma on the pool table. Waking up at 8:50 I realised I had a problem. Rather conveniently, the only reason I made the bus at all was because unbeknown to me summer time had just ended and the clocks had gone back. After God knows how many weeks [View Full Entry]

Carnaval!!
An important ingredient for having a good time during the carnival
Good news: I found a way to share videos. If you want to view them, then read this blog. There you’ll find a video of Salvador but also of other locations I have been to. A quote from someone else’s website: Salvador's Carnival got into the 2005 edition of the Guinness Book as the biggest Carnival and the biggest street party on earth. Each year, two million people crowd the streets and roads of the city during the six days of Carnival. Yes big, crowded, dirty and smelly it was but hell it was fun. I arrived safe and secure at [View Full Entry]

Carneval

South America » Brazil » Bahia » Salvador
Having done two nights of crazy carneval, we decided to spend a couple of days in the countryside, relaxing and getting our forces back for the last day of carneval when Fat boy slim would be playing. Chris' family has a lovely house with a beutiful garden not very far from Salvador. It is very close to the beach and there is a swimming pool in the garden. The days in the house were incredibly relaxing and nice. In the meantime my brother Peter and his g-friend Karin also came over all the way from London. We enjoyed two days at [View Full Entry]

Crazy, crazy, crazy

South America » Brazil » Bahia » Salvador
I did first day of carneval AND I WANT MORE!!!!! Ok, so finally I got to the purpose of my trip - to go and visit Chris in Salvador and attend carneval. Carneval in Salvador is not at all like all the pictures you see from Rio. No, here there are no halfnaked ladies in feather costumes. It is more like a crazy blockparty with bands playing on trucs that slowly go down the streets in the carneval areas. People can choose to buy tshirts from the different bands and follow them in so called blocos. We decided to go there [View Full Entry]
