Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

We've spent a couple of days in Salvador da Bahia - the centre of Afro-Brazilian culture! We are in Pelourinho - the safe, tourist area of the city. Unfortunately because of security there are not many other places you can visit, and no others at night so it feels a bit like a bubble in which you can't really get a feel for the place. Although that's probably not helped by the fact that lots of shops and museums are closed for Easter! The hostel, Las Laranjeiras, is really cool and always bustling with activity. We're off to Lencois later [View Full Entry]

This is a crazy city! first, let me tell you that Maryland or Korean drivers got NOTHING on Salvadorians... After 10pm you can go thru red lights as long as no one is coming....and some do it even when there is. THe city itself has a rich African and South American blend. it's great! There's a cool light house right down the street from my hotel, the historic downtown is great, and I don't have digital pix of that because my camera died, but I will have pix in a few days I will have pix when they are developed. There [View Full Entry]

Drunk, that is. Well, that was last night. I didn´t plan on drinking, and when I first started writing I was sitting down to dinner at a café. I am always inspired at the end of the day to jot down my thoughts and last night was no exception. So as a wrote on various paper napkins (I never seem to have my actual journal on me when I want it) I had a caiprinha (Brazil´s national drink). But at this café they made them with different fruits, not just with lime, and these new drinks I discovered were INCREDIBLE!!! [View Full Entry]

Salvador in North East Brazil or Bahia as its known is the third biggest city in Brazil and culturally is the most African-influenced. Just a bit of Lonely Planetesque information for you. That´s for free. We arrived late at night and were ripped off in a taxi before being pounced upon by 10 bead sellers, one of which escorted us to a policeman to confirm that he was not going to rob us. Which was extremely kind of him but we didn´t want a character reference, or to buy any beads, just to get to our hostel. The historic part [View Full Entry]

I love Brazil South America » Brazil » Bahia » Salvador
Basically, I am in love with Brazil! I have had the most amazing time in this country I have done everything from dancing in the streets at Carnival to walking through a cocoa field in a MST commune. Although I was looking forward to all the countries on the SAS itinerary, I was not particularly overjoyed at the idea of going to Brazil. The fact that we were going to be in Brazil during Carnival also contributed to some of my mixed feelings about Brazil. The first day we got to Brazil my friends and I went out to explore [View Full Entry]

Meet Beruška , the latest addition to our little team. After scouring the classifieds, the internet, and finally the streets of Salvador, for a Toyota Land Cruiser, we became convinced that these cars just don't exist in Salvador and prepared to move on to the next city, by bus. Just then, guess who shows up - none other than the beautiful Beruška herself, and parked in the parking-lot of our apartment nogal. What followed next was a series of skillful negotiations (with Danilo, Nanda's brother doing most of the talking obviously), a check-up at the local Toyota mechanic [View Full Entry]

Florianopolis Fully relaxed and recharged from our time in Iguazu, the much anticipated foray into Brazil was underway. Andy & I had met a young Australian couple Trent and Tegan, with whom we caught an early morning taxi and crossed the border into the adjacent brazillian province of Paraná. From Foz do Iguazu (the Brazilian town near Iguazu Falls) we jumped on a bus headed for Florianopolis, the beach-island resort capital city of Santa Catarina, to the south of Paraná. Andy, who had been to Florianpolis (or 'floppy-ya-knob-at-this' as he liked to call it) was really kee [View Full Entry]

Well New Orleans Mardis Gras was a big party but Carnival in Rio turned it up to 11. In N´Awlins you get the great jazz and creole cooking and as the parades are in procession and the floats go past people tend to get lost in the moment and lose all their inhibitions, scrambling to catch the beads that get tossed into the crowd and you end up looking like a gay Mr T with all the green, purple and gold around your neck (which symbolise faith , justice and power btw fact fans, though the significance is somewhat lost on [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Salvador after a great day and nights traveling fiasco, including 4 hours at Ouro Preto bus station, because we had forgotten the time zone had changed. We then decided to take the bus from Belo Horizonte to the airport by which time it was evening. The reason being to avoid a 24 hour bus ride. So we ended up with flights that took from 10pm until 5am and cost twice as much. Salvador at 7am was very different from the scenic Ouro Preto we had left behind. Basically this place was a bit scary so we legged it [View Full Entry]
