Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

Hold onto that camera!
´Thank-you for flying on our next generation aircraft´ were the words we heard as we touched down in Salvador. Again, it had been an appalling landing (seems to be the norm in South America), but the best thing was the ´next generation´ aircraft we´d just flown in was clearly older than the placement students at work! Still, we´d saved ourselves a 24 hour bus journey and we´d survived!! Salvador is probably one of the favourites for the scariest Danger & Annoyances section in the Lonely Planet, beating even Rio! We stayed out of the historic centre in one of the safer [View Full Entry]

Well, today is my last day in Brazil (technically, I guess tomorrow is, but since I will spend the night in the airport we are going to say its today). How can I recap the last week? Honestly, I think today is the first day I dont have much to do - except capoeira, go see Bale Foclorico, and catch the plane. Well... Salvador is the place to go if you want to find capoeira. There is a kind of neighborhood here called Pelourinho which is a bunch of cobblestone streets, and restored colonial buildings stuffed completely full of tourist souveniers, [View Full Entry]

happy august everyone! i am finally in northeast brazil, which is the area of the country that originally got me interested in studying brazil in the first place. i arrived in Salvador yesterday, excited to stay at my hostel close to the beach....only to discover that really the only thing near the hostel IS the beach (and a supermarket) and it takes at least 1/2 to get to the center of the city. that´s what happens when you book hostels online. :) i think today i will go to the Barra area of Salvador and check out two hostels that are [View Full Entry]

The Slave Market
The Slave Market
Slaves were brought from Africa to the port of Salvador and sold to landowners.
Desperate for some sunshine after 5 successive days of rain in Rio, we headed northwards to the soul of African Brazil, Salvador de Bahia. Located on the north-eastern coast of Brazil, Salvadors unique culture is famous for it´s music - drum beats can be heard all over the city all hours of the day and night, religion - a blend of Catholicism and Nigerian´s Candomble beliefs and most importantly, Capoiera the fabulously physical blend of dance and martial art. The culture stems from the 80% population with African origins, descended from the slaves brought in by the Portugese to work in [View Full Entry]

In Salvador I got my first mosquito bites (and have plenty of them) however I haven´t seen or heard a single mosquito!!! are they invisible here?! Also here the weather stopped spoiling us here :-( It was sunny only on the day when we arrived, it´s been raining since 3 days (very humid) and moving further to the north doesn´t seem to be a solution (we´re in Olinda now, close to Reclife, and it´s raining here as well). We were planning to go to some great beaches on the coast but nothing has worked out because of the weather. Hopefully this [View Full Entry]

Salvador was celebrating the Fiesta do San Juan the weekend we were there. This was good and bad, good because everybody was in party spirit with massive celebrations in the street, bad because nobody wanted to work so shops, restaurants, cafes and supermarkets were pretty much closed the whole time... Salvador was probably the most on edge we have been, regarding security. 2 of the people in our hostel were mugged in the first 12 hours of us being there. Its usually just a snatch and grab approach so we just prepared ourselves by going out with minimum cash in [View Full Entry]

We left Lima on time at 9pm with little indication of the trauma to come. The forecast was set fine, and we were expected to land in Sao Paulo, Brazil, at 6am the following morning, before catching a connecting flight to Salvador at 9am. Everything seemed to be fine initially, and we landed around 6ish at what we thought was Sao Paulo Airport, however after much confusion we realized that we were in fact at another airport (don’t recall the name) as the it was too foggy to land in Sao Paulo. Fair enough we thought, can’t be helped, I’m [View Full Entry]

So much has happened since I first arrived on the last day of February. Classes at OPA, the Organization for Permaculture and Art, started later than planned, but are now at full swing. I have been volunteering here, co-teaching a photography class, documenting the theater class, and working on odd projects. OPA combines the arts and environmental education to kids from low-income communities. After a shaky first day, the classes are going really well and the kids seem to be really enjoying it. Life in the city has its ups and downs. Living in the historic district of Santo AntĂ´nio, [View Full Entry]

From Rio we flew north two hours to Salvador, where we spent 3 days. What a great city, although we had our apprehensions when we arrived about 11.30pm on Sunday night. As we got closer to our Poussada (small hotel) we drove down smaller and smaller streets streets through what appeared to be a very seedy area with all of the locals standing or sitting in the streets drinking. Sharon was less than impressed once we got to the hotel, very small, no lifts, and appearing to be in the middle of nowhere. However the light of day on Monday morning [View Full Entry]

Salvador - 14th to 16th April We wake up at 7am feeling slightly debilitated from our partying the night before in Rio. We frantically pack and leave for the airport to catch our flight to Salvador. Given our previous check in experiences with GOL airlines we think we have given ourselves plenty of time to check in. How wrong could we be, there are about 20 check-in desks but every time we queue for a bit we get diverted to join another queue, this happens for about an hour until we only have 20 minutes before our flight leaves.
