Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

Met loads of cool people in the hostel and will probably join a few for wherever I´ll go next. Anyways it will be much quieter, safer and more relax then the Carnival, I need a vacation. Carnival What will I take from the carnival? Is it the biggest party in the world? Or the poverty who surrounds it? Is it the Beautiful [View Full Entry]

Street parade in Salvador
Street parade in Salvador
The Barra-Ondina circuit winds from the port along the coast road with beautiful views of the beaches and the sea.
Woo hoo!!!  James and I are in Salvador, Brazil right now and it~s Carnaval.. their annual party. Seriously man, this is crazy shit. It is officially the biggest party on earth, with more people than anywhere else gathered in the one place with the sole common purpose of partying for a full week. Oldies, youngies, they all get into it and everyone - everyone - is happy all the time. It is unbelievable. The place is going off 24-7 and there are different street parades all over the city, each with its own flavour, style, flair. Yesterday we went to [View Full Entry]

Carnaval (Language warning - this entry wouldn´t have the same cathartic release without a few adult references. I try not to discriminate, and offend everyone equally) So Carnaval - it´s like the Eurovision Song contest, only choreographed on top of enormous speakers, on the back of a semi-trailer. Singers famous to people I don´t know, wearing spandex, all singing what may as well be the exact same 3-word pop-drivel in a language I don´t understand. The difference is, while Eurovision is equal parts boring, tragic and amusing, I´m not laughing. AND, watching Eurovision usually doesn´t [View Full Entry]

It was pure conicidence that we arrived in Brazil just in time for Carnaval, the biggest party on the planet!! The two best places to experience it are in Salvador or Rio, but we were told that Salvador is the best, so we decided to stay there. Rio is more for the tourists and has the amazing costumes, whereas Salvador is for the Brazillians, who take to the streets to party for a whole week non stop til they drop. When we arrived in Salvador the hostel was nice, but the staff were horrible, not what you need when you arrive [View Full Entry]

Carnavale in Salvador has been an exciting, crazy and quite scary experience all at the one time. By way of background, Carnavale sees an estimated 2 million people cram into the beachside city of Salvador to party for a full week before Lent. Unlike Carnavale in Rio (which involves sitting in a grandstand watching a parade pass by), Carnavle in Salvador is a street party for the people where everyone joins in. Basically, you see people from every nationality and walk of life partying on the streets together and as a result, absolute mayhem ensues. To simplify it, there are 3 [View Full Entry]

So part of the reason I haven´t started my updates as I wasn´t sure how I would post up travel blogs. But thanks to having met the person who started this site... travelblog.org it is... HERE GOES... ENTRY NUMBER ONE!!! (I know you´ve been waiting for it) So having left Sydney 17th January 2008 (with of course both tears of sadness and joy as I´m such a sook) I started my many, many, many hours of flights to save a few dollars... lol. Sydney to Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur to Johannesburg, Johannesburg to Capetown. Two nights in Capetown was pretty uneventful. [View Full Entry]

Pelourinho, Salvador
Pelourinho, Salvador
Igreja NS do Rosário dos Pretos
It only took an hour by plane to get to Salvador from São Paulo, so before we knew it, Sam and I were yet in another Brazilian state - Bahia. When booking our accommodation, we had the choice of staying in either Pelourinho, the cultural centre of Salvador, or in Barra, a coastal suburb, and a quieter alternative. In the end we randomly chose Pelourinho, which turned out to be great as I have rarely come across such a vibrant and happening place. Having visited Ouro Preto, and Pelourinho also being a world heritage site, I kind of assumed the two [View Full Entry]
