Three more days passed before I finally pulled myself from Itacare's seductive grasp bringing my total there to nine days. The final day/night/morning consisted of an all nighter with miscellaneous goods, homemade firecrackers, and exploding fruit with Dave-O the Destroyer the Aussie extraordinaire. It was time to go. So I hopped on a bus at 7am for an eight hour journey south to Porto Seguro where I transferred onto a ferry to cross a river to Arraial D'Ajuda. Porto Seguro was nothing to write home about and I stayed one night in Arraial but found it to fancy for my liking. So I bused further south to Trancoso where I found a nice little town to stay put for a few days. My first and only night in Arraial D'Ajuda was OK, but like I mentioned ... read more

Our cycling adventure along the coast of Bahia is getting close to an end already. From Porto Seguro (big town), we caught a boat across Rio Buranhem to get to Arraial d’Ajuda, a peaceful tourist village surrounded by tropical vegetation. We cycled around town and enjoyed the narrow cobblestoned roads, shady plazas, colorful facades and old churches on top of the hill. From up there the view over the coastline is amazing and well-worth the steep climb on our bikes! In the winter time, Arraial d’Ajuda seems so calm and still. Most restaurants only open in the late afternoon and everyone seems to be taking a siesta at home. Arraial is a popular vacation spot for well-off Brazilians and Argentinians and the beach there was the busiest one we saw in 3 weeks in Bahia, but ... read more

Day 395 Friday 9th November It is goodbye to Ilha Grande today so we packed our bags had a great breakfast said our goodbyes and left for the port. As we walked down the beach we noticed that sometime this morning they had dug out the small stream leading into the beach and had made it difficult to cross. We watched some other tourists try to cross and sink into the sand and water, so with our boots on and backpacks we decided to take the long way through the back of the town to the port. The detour added another 15 minutes to our morning walk and we arrived at the dock to a long queue of people waiting to get the 10.00am ferry back to Angra do Reis. We were soon underway with the ... read more

We left Lencois on May 26th with a plan to be in Rio de Janeiro by June 1st, hoping to visit three place before arriving there. This meant we would be travelling about 2750km in a very short time, so we weren't optimistic that we'd left enough time to actually see anything! We took a 6 hour bus ride back to Salvador, waited there for 5 hours and caught a 12 hour ride south to Porto Seguro. When we arrived we took a bus to the seafront, walked to the port, took a boat across the river and finally another bus 5km to our destination, Arrial d'Juda. What a mission! Although Porto Seguro is the main town of the region, we were more interested in the smaller places stretching south along the coast; we had been ... read more

What's this?? Two blogs in one week?? Fear not, I'm not ill... I'm now on my summer holidays, and have decided it's time to do some retrospective blogging. In my previous blog I gave a very quick run through of some of the major events in the last 18 months, but to be fair, there was so much I missed out. So I've decided over the summer to look back in more detail over some of the things I've done and share them with you all. As some of you may have noticed, the location for this blog is dfferent to usual... Brazil For various reasons, I hadn't done any real travelling since my weekend to Carmelo for a visa run . In the Argentine summer I had gone back to England for Christmas, and since ... read more

The trip from Vitoria to Porto Seguro didn't go well. I maintain that the principal reason for this is that we had too good a nights sleep in our own room in Domingos Martins. Philippe blames it on the two ignorant locals in the seats behind us who didn't appear to have been on a bus before, let alone a night bus. While I did notice that they didn't stop talking from the start of the voyage until the end, Philippe had the added joy of having his hair or shoulder pulled each time they wanted to get up out of the seat (which, granted, was certainly more often than your average traveller). Needless to say we arrived grumpy and tired - however, we had decent accommodation booked this time round, to avoid a re-run of ... read more

South America. Yay!!!! After my 2007 trip, I came back to Korea to teach for another year.. something that wasn't quite in my plans, but figured its way in. One fateful evening in September 2008, I reunited with an aquaintance-- a Brazilian named Eduardo-- whom I hadn't seen in over a year. As we talked over drinks at one of my favorite Izakaya's (Japanese style bar) in Seoul, he started talking about Brasil this and Brasil that. He was going to return back to Sao Paulo after nearly three years of being away in Seoul and Beijing. The more he talked, the more I started to get interested. Two days later, I decided to backpack in South America for as long as my money could stretch.. I'm guessing five months. I flew into Sao Paulo from ... read more

We leave Caraiva with heavy hearts...it's easily our favorite place in Brazil so far and we'd love to stay. But all good things must come to an end and we know the vibe is about to change there anyway. It's no hardship going back to Arrial though. It's much busier than when we left but is still holding onto it's relaxed beachtown charm. The main beach here, Praia Mucuge is the busy party beach, lined with barracas playing loud forro or reggae, but walk a mile south and you get to the beautiful Praia Pitinga. Sometimes we hang out at Mucuge, but most of the time we head for 'our beach' Pitinga, and the chilled Barraca Pirates, complete with resident talking parrot, becomes 'our bar'. A funny thing with Brazilian beach behaviour...faced with miles of pristine, ... read more

Oi, oi. I hope you are keeping up with the Portuguese lessons. If so, you are probably doing better than us, who are still struggling. We have taken to speaking to people in Spanish whether they understand it or not. To them it makes as much difference as us speaking English, but to us we feel like we are putting in more effort! The Pantanal had left us in particularly good spirits. We had loved what we had seen of Brazil thus far, so decided we should see more of it than just Rio. We also figured it was nearly 5 months since we had sunned our selves on a beach so we were in definite need of a holiday. All this travelling can be hard work you know ... So we found ourselves a cheap ... read more
