Arraial d'Ajuda Travel Blogs

Background: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

Love, Joy, Peace
Love, Joy, Peace
...amen to that.
Two other people had told us about a little place just 100 miles north of Rio called Arrial do Cabo. We got a ticket from the bus station in Rio which was manic as its the holiday season in Brazil and everyone is off on their jollys. It was only 3 hours up the coast and the hostel was really nice with a pool. Arrial do Cabo is a quiet unassuming town but its main attraction are its beaches. We got up early and wandered down to the best beach and it was beautiful. It made a welcome change from the [View Full Entry]

Oi, oi. I hope you are keeping up with the Portuguese lessons. If so, you are probably doing better than us, who are still struggling. We have taken to speaking to people in Spanish whether they understand it or not. To them it makes as much difference as us speaking English, but to us we feel like we are putting in more effort! The Pantanal had left us in particularly good spirits. We had loved what we had seen of Brazil thus far, so decided we should see more of it than just Rio. We also figured it was nearly 5 [View Full Entry]

Rio-PortoAfter leaving Rio at 8:15pm on Friday July 20, I arrived in Porto Seguro, Bahia around 3:30pm on Saturday. Long trip, yeah I know. As usual, the overnight part sucked, I couldn't sleep because in the darkness my phobia of Brazilian busses reigned freely, entirely unhelped by the fact that the Baiana woman (a woman from Bahia dressed in traditional Bahian clothing) sitting next to me was very obviously as petrified as I felt--she was muttering prayers under her breath through the long night nonstop. It helped none that the day before I traveled, while [View Full Entry]

When we flew down through London-esque clouds into Porto Seguro we were a little concerned our 30 hour trip might not have been worth it. When we boarded the ferry in the rain, we really knew it!! Our beach heaven was not so heavenly... After another hour on the bus we arrived in Trancoso, a little drier at this point, and our accommodation was idyllic. A beautiful little room in the middle of pretty gardens, with a swimming pool to boot. What we didnt know at this point, was that we were about to eat the finest breakfast for the [View Full Entry]

Carnaval

 South America » Brazil » Bahia » Arraial d'Ajuda
Untitled Rosanne Steinke, Luke Harrison We celeabrated Carnaval Brazilian style in the little beach town of Arraial D'Ajuda. Lutan a brazillian honky that we met in Saquerema hooked us up with a cheap place to stay where him and his family were camping at. Lutan is a 40yr old man and is an independant musician. He plays the tamborine. Yeah don´t laugh, he can rock that tamborine harder then I thought was possible. Anyways me and this guy ending up being drinking buddies back in Saquerema and he just took off without sayi [View Full Entry]

Mini Paradise

 South America » Brazil » Bahia » Arraial d'Ajuda
after a 21 hour bus journey, we arrived at porto sergui. We then got a 2 min ferry to Arrial D Ajuba and found a hostel - Soduco Maloca which is really nice and clean (although we were bitten by the little critters around so take lots of repellent)! This place is a mini paradise. The shops are lovely and you feel safe - unlike Rio! The beach is basically one long stretch and if you walk down the other end this is where most people are. As we were getting ready to leave the beach one day a boat anchored [View Full Entry]

OMG he´s back again...riding an unusual high, inexplicable and maybe just getting over the travails of the past few days...and knowing where I am, I think!..its Arrial DÁjuba..maybe..does it matter?... On email - I´d sent one off to someone and hoping they hadn´t just hit the ´delete´button automatically, assuming it was another useless rant or offer of something unnecessary, unwanted or unobtainable...I love opening my email after a spell and seeing lots of entries, then despair seeing all the usual offers to either make my dick bigger or my mortgage smaller...is it the same operation?..the [View Full Entry]

" Out there with these natives it must be temptaion to be God. 'Cause there's a conflict in every human heart between the rational, the irrational, between good and evil. And good does not always triumph. " The best thing about Austins predilection for ordering wine is the speed and ferocity with which he accomplishes it. "Bring me wine!", he screamed at the waiter who dared to offer us a menu or two. "Anything from the bottom of the shelf." "In fact, bring me your cheapest and worst wine. And Goddamnit if they are not the same, bring me both bottles!" [View Full Entry]
