Background: Bolivia, named after independence fighter Simon BOLIVAR, broke away from Spanish rule in 1825; much of its subsequent history has consisted of a series of nearly 200 coups and counter-coups. Comparatively democratic civilian rule was established in 1982, but leaders have faced difficult problems of deep-seated poverty, social unrest, and illegal drug production. Current goals include attracting foreign investment, strengthening the educational system, resolving disputes with coca growers over Bolivia's counterdrug efforts, and waging an anticorruption campaign.

After my passport adventure, I arrived in La Paz early morning on Thursday 17 September, the same day Robson was going to be back from his visit to Alfredo's family and village. Robson arrived in Bolivia three days earlier. I had a connection in Miami and so did Vincent, coming from London. As the gods were somehow with us, we were on the same plane. Vincent has been to South America many times but none of us had been to Bolivia before. It was great to meet someone, a familiar face, and spend some time together. While waiting for Robson who [View Full Entry]

Our next stop was our 4th South American country, Bolivia, and more specifically Copacabana on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Despite its altitude of 4000 metres the days are hot and sunny, although the nights are pretty chilly. We decided to stay here for 2 nights, so that we could spend a day chilling out, and a day on Isla del Sol, an island on the lake. The day we arrived was as described above, hot and sunny, so were able to wander around the town, visit the cathedral, and have some trout from the lake for lunch. In the evening [View Full Entry]

At 3660m above sea level, La Paz is the highest capital city in the world with its buildings clinging to the sides of the canyon and downwards. There are many alleys and markets in the centre of the city, with many of the indigenous women walking around with their long black plaits hanging from under their bowler hats selling all types of wares from food to magical goods. The women wear the hat on the side of their head if they are single and on top if they are married. The streets are full with traffic, mostly public transport collectivos or [View Full Entry]

Heading into the Jungle and down the Death Road Funny - time seems to fly when you work hard but when travelling one would assume time is travelling slower. I can confirm that is NOT the case! We are now 55 days into our trip and I need to do some catching up on our travel stories. From our last trip to the Salt Flats we went to La Paz - officially Bolivia´s capital at 3660m. The first view of La Paz was breathtaking. The city is located at the base of several mountains and houses are built all the way [View Full Entry]

I knew we were going to have a good time in La Paz, the Hostal we had chosen had an attached micro-brewery, the beers from which were served in a rooftop bar with spectacular views over the city. The beers were amazing, probably the best we have had all trip, there really was no need to leave the hostal! When we did leave the hostal we just wandered the streets taking in the bizzare sights that La Paz has to offer such as the Llama foetuses for sale in the witches market, the protests that seem to occur on a daily [View Full Entry]

After La Paz we spent a few days chilling out in the beautiful city of Sucre (officially the capital of Bolivia). From Sucre, we visited dinoland on the exquisitly cheesy dinobus. Dinoland contains loads of dinosaur footprints preserevd in the rocks. Lifesize models had been created based on the footprints, of the dinosaurs that once roamed this part of the earth, one of which a bit like a diplodocus was up to 36m in length. When we were away from ´Jurassic park´ we were mostly drinking barcardi and playing Perudo (some odd betting game with dice, greatly enhanced by the presence [View Full Entry]

Well lets just say the bus ride from Puno, Peru to La Paz, Bolivia was quite an adventure on its own! Fortunately, the bus company we took was recommended and taken by many tourists so we weren´t scared. Well to start off, we stopped at Copacabana as expected. But what we didn´t expect was switching to a much smaller bus and making an extra stop. I still don´t know what city or area we stopped at but they told us to get off the bus, buy a ticket for the boat, and take the boat accross the lake where we would [View Full Entry]

Tupiza is the wildwest of Bolivia - it was here that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid came to plot their fated final heist. Paula and Yoav were with us, over on holiday. It was fantastic to be with them on this 4 day jeep tour which from start to finish was filled with the most incredible scenery. From Tupiza our 4x4 climbed upwards, twisting through the rocky red landscape. Under cloudless skies of the bluest blue, we watched the landscape morph as we travelled from Tupiza south-west towards the Chilean border and then north to the Salar de Uyuni. The [View Full Entry]

Let me preface this entry by saying, holy shit.... this place is one of the most amazing places I have ever visited. Isla del Sol is the Inca creation site, and the birthplace of the sun in Inca mythology. For those who do not know where this is really, it lies on Lago de Titicaca, one of the highest navigable lakes in the world. To get here, we took a boat from Copacabana and docked at Yumani. Now, if you are thinking of going here, there are a few things you should know. First, there really is not that much to [View Full Entry]
