The huge white expanse of Salar de Uyuni, salt flats, has to be the most well known place to visit in Bolivia and I'm sure there aren't many people who would bypass it, why would you?! It's an incredible part of the world! People either do it as a multi day tour or day trip or the occasional adventurous people cycle there! For us, we heard that a lot less people do the tour from Tupiza than from Uyuni town (also less people per jeep) and that tours from Tupiza arrive at different times to places than the swarm of Uyuni or San Pedro tours (due to going the opposite direction) so the decision to go from Tupiza was a no brainer even if more costly. We chose Alexandro Tours from reading some excellent reviews and ... read more

Off the the bus station again for another long trip on public transport. The bus is much the same, but a little less flash as the one to Puno a couple of days ago. This time there is no lunch stop so we stock up on biscuits to get us through the day. However we do have a border crossing and a farewell to Mike. The check out of Peru and check into Bolivia goes smoothly. We have to take our big bags with us but can leave our small bags in the bus. Perhaps they are only interested in really big quantities of drugs. We have hugs and tears all round as Mike leaves us and Erica takes control of our unruly group. The rural houses in Bolivia look a little more substantial than those ... read more

Our journey from Cusco across to Copacabana in Bolivia was fairly straightforward. It only involved a single bus and a well organised fast border crossing which was a far cry from the bad reviews we’d read online. Copacabana is a small town next to Lake Titcaca which is the largest lake in South America and is known as the “highest navigable lake” in the world at around 3,800 metres above sea level. We only stopped off for one night to break up the journey to La Paz but it was enough time to eat the tasty local dish of trout, panic because none of the ATM’s were working and find somewhere that would change up our emergency dollars and marvel at the plumbing / electrical job that had been done in the bathroom of our room. ... read more

When you think of Bolivia, the first thing that comes to mind is Salar de Uyuni salt flats or Lake Titicaca, but there is more to Bolivia than you may think. We had no idea that there was a western style landscape sitting in the south of the country and it is definitely a place to visit with its incredibly red mountain backdrop and quiet feel. We wanted to come to Tupiza as the tours to Salar de Uyuni go a different route and are a lot less busier than going from Uyuni town plus the landscape around peaked some interest. We arrived to Tupiza from Sucre, on our final night bus of this trip, at 4.30 am. Luckily the hostel was only five minutes walk away from the bus station and that someone was able ... read more

Incredibly tired after a flight, our overnight bus and 2 more flights. Arrived in La Paz & a guide took us to a great place for lunch. Then a wander around the shops selling Alpaca so that we can keep warm in the freezing places ahead. Then I got hit with the altitude, poor boy had to go to bed early. Briefly met the new group a good mix of Scots, English, Swiss a Kiwi and a German. Next day feeling a little better & not hearing great things about the hotel breakfast we decided to spoil ourselves & return to cafe de Munro for breakfast. We will be there again when we get back to la Paz in a weeks time. We walked through the markets to the cathedral, in front of which we watched ... read more

After taking a very crappy night bus (completely different standards to Peru), we arrived in to Sucre, known as the 'White City'. The further south you go in Bolivia, the more Country Western the landscape becomes. Again, like Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, Bolivia is a country with an amazing range of diverse climates... except an ocean climate, and that's a sore point in the countries history! It was nice to be back out of the big cities and we spent the first day (after catching up on some lost sleep) effectively people watching in the main square, watching photographers trying to drum up business when everyone has camera phones and wondering why the old lady next to us on the bench was yelling out 'Edgar!!' When no one was around. Sucre is a university city so ... read more

There's something not right about going from the tranquil and scenic Lake Titicaca to a busy, smelly and big city of La Paz. It feels that it should have been the other way around! Nonetheless, we didn't want to stick around La Paz for more than two nights, for us, large cities aren't our favourite as there are better things to see and do outside of them. We stayed at a hostel (the adventure brew hostel) which was a good place to meet people and with events happening most nights. We found ourselves having a bit of a go at karaoke on the fist night (somehow the footage is missing!) and played a lot of pool and table tennis. It also had a great BBQ ip on the rooftop on our final night there. One thing ... read more

Country number 4, Bolivia! What better way to enter the country by spending some time at Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world at 3800 masl that's almost equally split between Peru and Bolivia. We decided that the Peru side would be too touristy and heard that a small town called Copacabana (not to be confused with the Brazilian beach) was a more idyllic and relaxed place to be. It surely didn't disappoint! It coincided with our 3 year wedding anniversary so we treated ourselves to the iconic Los Olas accommodation with rooms that have no doubt been inspired and built after a trip to Barcelona accompanied with a sensational view of the bay. We reckon we had the best accommodation (each room being a different design and size, including a sea shell!) and ... read more

Here were are, day 3 and actually four of this amazing little trip. As you can guess, since our trip to Uyuni, we have down some solid wine on the way...but what a trip in Uyuni. This is were Cordillera agency guides made a solid difference. Our guide isn't much talkative, so more than once, we share information between ourselves without him being involved, but today, at least, the guides will make the difference, they are turning into top solid photographers! Last trip...it's was more like figure it out yourself. We had crossed the Salar de Uyuni in Winter too...but no sunrise or sunset in sight. Today is different. The guide gave us a choice to depart the Salt Hostal at 5 am or 7am. Obvious choice, a guide doesn't choose on purpose to wake up ... read more

Second day in Bolivia, and we are settling at a slightly lower altitude. Most of the day will be spend from 4000 meters to just above 3500 meters. We were normally due to the visit the Geysers area. But here it is, the geysers are at around 5000 meters, and up there, the snow is still massively packed. It is not like they would send snow machines to clear it....no proper roads to clear, smile! So if our drivers told us it's a no go with our Land Rovers, I guess it is actually a no go. Good news is, I've already done it, and Tanya has seen few geysers with me around the world. So we are heading for something we normally don't visit. There were pre-inca writings on rocks...more very weird rock formations....plus we ... read more
