Die Salar ... read more

Another day, another city and oh so much to tell. I guess I will pick up where Troy left off, and fill you in on the adventures of San Pedro de Atacama as briefly as possible. First thing was the sandboarding, we met the company at 4 and along with 8 other guys we loaded the van to be taken to the valle de muerte (valley of death)...I wasnt worried at all! Upon reaching the valley of death, it did not resemble death at all... rocky mountain formations on one side, snowcapped mountains on the other, and the soft sandy dunes (but like no dunes at home, they were big!) in the middle, it was beautiful. But I guess the death part came from the hike up the hill.... it was tough going, the acent itself ... read more

After we had all climbed down from the Pringles tube, Sharon passed the addictive snacks around, Lewi grabbed a pinch of salt from the floor, sprinkled it on the crisp and munched. This is how to get extra salty pringles in Uyuni...The Salar de Uyuni to be precise. The Salar de Uyuni is the worlds largest salt flat and was once part of Lago Minchin, a huge prehistoric saltwater lake that used to cover most of southwest Bolivia. Now its dried up remains only covers a mere 12,106 sq km, and most of that was under about 7cm of water when we visited. This gave the scene a surreal tropical island feel as our Toyota Landcruiser surged through the intensly salty water, shimmering ripples fanning out beside us seemingly as far as the blue haze on ... read more

Travelling through Bolivia is the craziest I’ve experienced in any country. This started with my entrance across the border. All the passengers on the bus were herded off to pay for an extra ticket to cross a river. This was no normal bridge crossing though. We clambered into a tiny dingy/boat and had life jackets thrust upon us, whilst our coach holding all our possessions was driven onto floating planks of wood to meet us on the other side of the river. Apparently bridges haven’t reached Bolivia yet. Then, when we tried to leave La Paz on another coach the union’s strike over pay and conditions contributed to another interesting journey. In Bolivia a strike is a little more disruptive than a tube strike back home. A journey that should have taken 3 hours actually took ... read more

After 28 hours and 4 buses (it was suppose to be 22hrs, 2 buses but one broke down and just before the 3rd one did we swapped again) we finally arrived in San Pedro de Atacama. On the bus we realised we'd taken the company used by miners and not tourists i.e. We were the only females with 24 Chilean men. They were very sweet and as we went by they pointed out the hand in the desert and where the Chilean miners had been trapped. In San Pedro de Atacama we strolled through their Market and organised our next few days. In the evening Lucille & Amanda were able to join a stargazing tour (only 2spaces left, me & Jane decided will try do it in Bolivia). After finding a nearby football pitch Jane and ... read more

After Cycling The Death Road, we headed back on ourselves, south to a place called Uyuni to begin our tour of the Salt Flats. It´s one of the must see sites in Bolivia and is a massive arid flat desert where there was once a land locked sea which has since disappeared leaving the flat salt beds. We made our way by overnight bus, had been told to expect a bumpy ride and were not disappointed. After about 30 minutes the bus hit rough terrain and the remainder of the journey felt like driving through an earthquake. On arrival, the first few hours were spent scoping out different tour operators and we ended up settling on Tito Tours from the advice of a Slovenian girl, who along with another English couple, and our now two week ... read more

FIRST STEPS INTO BOLIVIA Our first flight took us from Asuncion to Santa Cruz, landing at 11:45pm. Despite all the forms we had to fill in on the flight and the number of guards around we passed swiftly through immigration and customs and got the last few seats to bed down for the night. After a very refreshing few hours sleep (!) and a 30 minute flight we landed in Cochabamba. We took the ‘mirco’ (bus) to the town centre and bus station to get on our 9am coach to Oruro, which left promptly and was pretty comfortable. The journey was amazing as the bus climbed through the hills on a surprisingly smooth road. We probably averaged about 40 mph the whole way but still managed to overtake a few trucks. This was far from ... read more

A day in Uyuni without booking a trip to the Salt Flats meant another was on the cards. The prospect of another 24 hours in that town would require some chemical assistance. Ben and Fiona checked out of their hovle and into the hostelling international around the corner. At twice the price it offered no water, no electricity and no hospitality. But all Ben needed was its kitchen. It took Ben an hour to skin the cactuses. He ran his pocket knife along the valleys in the stellate plant then peeled the papery outer layer from the green flesh. He chopped them up, added about three litres of water and boiled them. Two and a half hours later, Ben drained the cactus juice and used a plastic bag with a hole in the corner to squeeze ... read more

Tuesday 26th October We’d spent a week in La Paz and had a hell of a time but it was time to move on. We had intended to go to Trinidad, a city in the North, and then a boat down to Santa Cruz. However we discovered that getting a bus to Trinidad would be 29 hours which was not on the cards. We decided instead to get a bus to Uyuni and check out the Bolivian salt flats. There were two buses to Uyuni - the tourist and the local bus. The tourist bus was B$240 and the local was B$120. Though always keen to save a bit of coin, we decided to get the tourist bus because we’d caught a local bus from Arequipa to Puno and spent six hours with our knees on ... read more
