Sucre is the OTHER capital of Bolivia, but of course no one except the sucreños actually hold any kind of significance to this. They actually hold quite a lot of significance to it, and never suggest that Sucre, without government buildings, at a dead-end part of Bolivia, in a small colonial town, maybe doesn´t deserve the title of world capital if you plan on your taxi driver taking you to your destination without a severe lecture. But nonetheless it´s something cool to store away in your memory bank of random world trivia. We got to Sucre from Potosí, by colectivo (shared taxi). The system for colectivos is that they wait until they´re full and then leave. There are a lot of them, so anybody that looks remotely like thinking of going to Sucre is pounced upon. ... read more

Welcome to Bolivia! After 24 hours of travelling after leaving the Pantenal we made it to our first stop, Santa Cruz. This hasn't got its own entry because we were only there a day and half of it was spent recovering from the long journey. However, it was a pretty town and the afternoon was spent in an Aqua Park having loads of fun! We loved the swimming pool as I was a bit fed up of sharing my water with fish and Eric had loads of fun playing on the slides. They managed to coax me onto 2 of them once, one involved a vertical drop and the other a swirling tub where you drop down the middle. Not particularly my idea of fun but it was ok! The people in Boliva look a lot ... read more

Well, we have moved quickly across Bolivia in the last few days. Saturday in Potosi we did our mine tour, and most of you have read Jords blog to hear about the nightmare but I figured I´d post a few pictures and share my insights on the matter as well. The tour started with everyone gearing up in plastic jackets, coverall pants, gum boots, hard hats and head lamps (powered by a really heavy battery on your back). We went to the miners market and got some Coca leaves and explosives. Things got a lot better real fast! Coca leaves are what they make cocaine out of, although chewing them is basically just like a caffeine rush combined with chewing tobacco, Gav & the Beak would love it, not sure if we can get some across ... read more

The bus we took from La Paz was heavily over booked which resulted in those who booked/arrived late having to sit and sleep in the aisle. Fortunately for us we arrived early (for once) and settled into our assigned seats for the overnight 14 hour journey. The driver's assistant had a penchant for very loud, violent films and en route to Sucre, he played three, all at 'old people´s' volume! seemingly unaware of the passengers disinterest and discomfort. The 20 minutes of white noise that followed each film was particulary mind-numbing and nearly drove us to dispair. All S.American bus journeys we have experienced so far end up taking much longer than planned and this was no exception. Some 18 hours later we bumbled into Sucre. Sucre was the original capital of Bolivia and was where ... read more

Days 21, 22 & 23 After a couple of flights we were in Sucre, a beautiful small city with white colonial buildings. Our hotel was gorgeous and had a big court yard in the middle of it. Sucre is the richest city in Bolivia and it shows!! The next day we went on a city tour to the cemetry - sounds odd but it was really interesting as all the tombs are encased over ground or in monuments and then went to see some dinosaur tracks. It was unbelievable, there were these 80 million year old dinosaur tracks that were found when digging in a concrete factory, they're still digging away next to them and they're not protected in any way!! We then visited a textiles museum - again doesn't sound that enthralling but it was ... read more

Unfortunatley with this wedding in Chile in a few weeks I have run myself short of time. But I couldn´t leave Bolivia without seeing Sucre. Sucre is probably the prettiest city in Bolivia. I hear it is very much like Santa Cruz, but unfortunately I have had to give that a miss too. It is (the town centre anyway) is very colonial and still painted it´s orginal white. It is very tranqual after La Paz, and I am pleased I came up for the weekend. So I only have two days to see Sucre. And the stink thing is that one of those days is a sunday, and everything is closed, so really only have one day. So Monday morning I took a trip out to a cement works where they have discovered the largest collection ... read more

18th November 2005 - We flew from Santa Cruz to Sucre (the official capital of Bolivia) arriving at about 11.20am. Sucre is a very pretty town which is full of white washed colonial buildings with a pleasant leafy plaza. Although it is officially the capital it only has a population of 225,000 and La Paz has taken most of the power away from it other than that of the supreme court. We got a taxi from the airport to the town centre and jumped straight onto the Dino Truck with all of our baggage. The Dino Truck took us to Cal Orcko and the Fancesa cement quarry. Apparently in 1994 when the ground was being cleared an employee uncovered an almost vertical mudstone face with hundreds of dinosour footprints preserved in it. The site was quite ... read more

After Potosí, I got a taxi all the way to Sucre. On some routes in Bolivia (but only some and I don’t know why those and not others) instead of taking a bus, you can take a shared taxi to get to your destination. You turn up a the bus station and wait till the taxi is full. Then you leave. I travelled with Christian and Josée and we went one better. We got a taxi just for the three of us to take us door to door from our hotel in Potosí to the one of our choice in Sucre. All this for USD13.75 for all of us. Even better: our driver had a modern car and the road was beautifully paved! Sucre is still the official capital of Bolivia even though all but the ... read more
