Last night was yet another nightbus journey for me, this time to Sucre, the official capital of Bolivia. It was supposed to take around ten hours but two hours into the ride, the bus broke down in the absolute middle of nowhere. We had to wait another 2 hours for a replacement to arrive. When the new bus turned up, it was a bit bigger so I was lucky enough to have two seats to myself and was able to curl myself into a ball across them and sleep. That is until a girl trying to sell corn decided to take a seat on my head and then upon awakening, a man asked if the seat was free and I had to give it up. Good while it lasted though. 17 hours after leaving Cochabamba on ... read more

I didn´t love my time in Sucre - not its fault - so this might not be the most enthusiastic blog you´ve ever read. Sucre is the consitutional capital of Bolivia and is rather handsome. It feels fairly small and the roads are so narrow that the cars honk at every intersection. There´s a big square full of trees in the middle of town and the buildings are all white. Around the city are pyramid-shaped scrubby hills. The weather in Sucre while I was there was always very pleasant - warm and sunny. I was planning on staying in Sucre for 3-4 weeks and doing some voluntary work at Fox Academy while also learning Spanish. Unfortunately Fox was pretty disorganised and this is the main reason I didn´t stay. I had been trying to find out ... read more

Sucre - A Children's Crusade I arrived in the Bolivian city of Sucre at the same time as the holy relics of a modern day saint. It was not my intention to do so, and I doubt it was his either. As I crossed the main plaza in Sucre beneath the tall trees and the stern gaze from the statue of the city's founder, General Sucre, I saw a large gathering forming in the far corner of the square. The crowd comprised mostly of school children between the ages of 11 and 16, as well as a few parents, locals and bemused tourists. A procession was forming along the street leading into the square. I could see several vehicles, flags and blue and white balloons all gathering together in the narrow road between brilliant white colonial ... read more

Hola Mis Amigos! I believe I left off on arrival in Sucre after another Bolivian bus journey that would have changed my opinion of Bolivian buses if it weren´t four hours late because it kept stopping every now and again for an hour to let the chicken/hamburger/bread and egg sellers on board! Still, I was just very happy to be back in Sucre and have a couple of weeks of Spanish lessons and to catch up with Vicky from Trailfinders (not her legal title). So I headed to a hostel I had booked just for one night to settle back into Sucre, before doing some shopping around other hostels that afternoon. I found a really nice little place called ´Hostal Pachamama´ with a lovely older Bolivian couple running it. It had a nice garden area for ... read more

After ¨Día del Compadre¨, I headed to Sucre with the three guys I met in Potosí. Cool little town (actually quite a bit bigger than the other towns I have visited), all the buildings are white, cobblestone streets, plazas and churches everywhere you look (weird, I know, that never happens here). We just stayed there for about three nights before my new friends headed off to Cochabamba and I grabbed a bus southbound to Tarija.... read more

We´ve found somewhere with decent internet, so are still trying to get more photos up. So... We ended up staying in Salta for about two weeks in total. That was the fault of Enrique at Hostel Del Centro who fed us cocoa pops, and showed us that the best Empañadas in the world were in the restauaurant across the road. We got to know pretty much everyone at the hostel, and spent New Years Eve with them drinking Malbec out of plastic beakers at the picnic table, then heading to the clubs that open at 2am. We did a bit of that cultural stuff while we were there. Probably the most striking was visiting the pickled Inca they have at the MAM museum. It was a young boy that had been sacrificed to the Gods around ... read more

Sucre - a welcome stop for 3 reasons: 1) we were getting tired from moving on so much and wanted a base for a while; 2) we wanted to enjoy the year round spring like climate Sucre enjoys and 3) we fancied brushing up on our Spanish and wanted to do a week´s language course. We were able to do all three. We found a good Spanish school, Jonty learnt loads of new verbs and I was able to chat away all week with someone paid to correct my every mistake (not a job I´d want to take on, ha, ha) locals never correct you but its the only way to improve. We also found a place to relax at the highest point of the city (La Recoleta) where you could sit in a deckchair and ... read more

After managing to get some sleep in our delightful cama bus (cama means bed in Spanish), we arrived in Sucre - 12 hours south of La Paz on luxuriously paved roads. It is also at a delightfully lower elevation than La Paz, at only 2600m. Sucre is the historical capital of Bolivia, and upon seeing it, it is clear why, it has a lovely look - all the buildings are white with red, tile roofs. The main part of town has lots of wonderful colonial architecture. The city is lively and has all the amenities one might need, as well a rich history involving the liberation of Bolivia from the Spanish, and the formation of an independent republic. We arrived early in the morning and arranged a taxi from the bus station to our hostel - ... read more

We made it to Sucre in the afternoon on the 12th following a short 3 hour bus ride from Potosi. The city (also known as the City of Four Names - La Plata, Charcas, Ciudad Blanca (White City), and Sucre) was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on December 13, 1991 due to its history and colonial architecture and was a nice place to spend a few days. We stayed at the ´Hostel Cruz de Popayan´which was alright (with the exception of a horrible smelling bathroom due to black mold above the shower) and ate literally every single meal at ´Joy Ride Cafe´as recommended by the Lonely Planet - they have amazing food! On our 2nd day we visited the small mountain of Cal Orck'o located about 6 km outside of Sucre which is home ... read more

... read more
