We were up early on our last day in Sucre to catch the bus to the famous Tarabuco markets which are held every Sunday in Tarabuco village about 64 klms from the city. The countryside that we passed through was stunning, the hills were multi coloured layers of rock strata and we also passed several canyons. It was very dry - however I’m not sure that the region would get much rain so probably looks like that all the time. The little town was buzzing when we got off the bus. The main tourist stalls were spread out around the main square - they were ablaze with colourful shawls, textiles and an endless amount of alpaca hats, socks and jumpers. There were, as expected, many tourists shopping and taking photographs. We first visited a shop run ... read more

While in Sucre, we did a weekend hike to through the Maragua crater, a region of unusual rock formations. The crater was formed by erosion, it contains preserved dinosaur footprints and fossils of marine shells are still found in the region and sold by local children. We decided that one backpack would be enough for both of us, so naturally I assumed the duties of a mule. For some reason we also thought it would be nice to bring a bottle of wine. Let me mention that I felt every last milliliter of that wine during the trek! On the Saturday we started by riding a micro to the outskirts of Sucre and once we had successfully changed the bus tire, we drove on to Chataquila, where we visited a little stone chapel dedicated to the ... read more

So I decided not to get out of Sucre as soon as I had originally planned for a few different reasons. The main one for not leaving Sucre was their market, and I don´t mean their tourist market but their food market. Everyday I spent hours walking around and buying super cheap but awesome quality food. In the morning I could have my coffee and breakfast for less than a $1, and then lunch fell into the $1.50 range while an awesome fruit salad would cost closer to $0.50. So not only has it been a good place to stop and chillout for awhile (I have been doing lots of that) but also a good place to fill up on delicious and interesting food (as well as realign my budget considerably). I spent yesterday with Jordan ... read more

Even though the Sunday market in the village of Tarabuco is quite a touristic experience, it is still used by the locals of the pueblos to come together, buy and barter and stock up their food supply for the next week(s). Some people leave their villages before dawn in order to walk or ride their mules and donkeys to the market. On Tarabuco market you can buy everything from locally produced food, souvenirs and artscraft to electronic goods, clothes, music and offerings to Patchamama (Mother Earth). For most of the locals the market is quite a big issue: This is why many of them dress up to show their colourful local costumes. We were lucky to arrive at the market really early at around 9am. At this time we were the only tourists there and we ... read more

To escape Valle Grande, it is necessary to take a 13 hour taxi to Sucre. This is hellish. We say a sad goodbye to the students and Mario, the teacher, and get into our chosen driver´s very comfortable, new, great big van (it has already taken us 2 hours to choose a driver, so we dont actually leave until 5 in the evening. whilst this driver doesnt drink, which is a plus, he also doesnt chew coca...eek). The seats go back, it is clean, the windows are electric, i start thinking this isnt going to be so bad. Lisa is ill, she has an ear infection and is almost crying from pain, but we all think best to just let her curl up and sleep and get her to Sucre as quickly as possible. We ... read more

I have now reached saturday 12th in my summary of the past few days. On the morning of Saturday, I meet lisa, galen, tristan to take a taxi to puka puka. They have been in Sucre to buy 1000 (later to be 3000) trees to plant in the village, and also to buy materials to build male and female urinals (I have been quickly initiated into the gritty details of toliet building, the problems, the different styles and methods. Again, as i am sure you are pleased to hear, i will come back to this later!) So, loaded up with pipes, urinals, tubes etc, we set off in the taxi. For the next hour and a half we happily chew coca, eat biscuits and observe the barren scenery. The most noticable thing about the countryside ... read more

Another quick blog. First I am trying to use a "statistics tracking" program for my photos. The program shows number of hits, what site visitors came from and what city, state, country they came from. Now the last blog i sent out showed 0 hits from Illinois. Now for you that don't know it i am from Illinois and if this is correct it means that even my mom isnt looking at my photos. So just in case there is any confusion I only put a few of my photos on travelblog but instead include a link to my photos which are hosted on smugmug. So, if you would like to see some of my photos from tarabuco CLICK HERE Now a little about what is going on. i went to tarabuco a few weeks ... read more
