I travelled to La Paz on a night bus from Sucre and was astounded to discover that the pictures weren´t lying and it REALLY was a full cama (bed) seat. I didn´t sleep too well at first because of the altitude and windy roads, but in the end I had a good old kip. Actually getting on the bus was a bit of a palaver as unbeknownst to me, you needed a ticket to get on to the platform, and once I made it there, I discovered that I was supposed to leave my luggage at the ticket office upstairs. With five minutes to go until departure I raced up the stairs as fast as I could go with my rucksack, waited stroppily while a local pushed in front of me, deposited my bag, collected my ... read more

Hi all! After finishing our Salar de Uyuni trip, we headed to La Paz (the capital of Bolivia) with our 3 friends. The bus ride was.......let's just say not quite what we grew to expect from Argentina and Chile, but, we made it safe and sound nonetheless. Not much to report from La Paz. We essentially relaxed for 3 days here in a great hostel. The 5 of us spent most of our time eating great meals! La Paz has every type of food imaginable, and super cheap which was a nice change of pace from Chile. We enjoyed great Chinese, Thai, Bolivian and Indian (X2) meals. We are talking soup, main, dessert for like 40 Bolivian- prox. $6! We were in heaven! Our next major adventure was a 6 day pampas/jungle tour in the northeastern ... read more

Aangekomen ... read more

The day after Bex and Melissa left for Canada Nate and I left for Puno at 7 in the morning. The goal was to get to Puno and see the reed islands (uros). When we got there I guess Nate's Canadian side came out and wasn't really impressed by this lake (we see lots in BC) so we didn't feel like staying. So five minutes after arriving at the bus terminal we were leaving once more for La Paz. The road to La Paz included a boat ride across Titicaca (a barge for the bus). We arrived in La Paz (a dazzling arrival as you come in from the top side of the city and discover a city built basically in a bowl) at about 10pm without any hostal reservations. So we tagged along with a ... read more

We flew from La Paz to Rurrenabaque on the morning of the 29th. We chose to fly as, with it being the wet season, both the weather and roads can be unpredictable and make the 18+ hour bus ride a nightmare. Fortunately flights only cost $75 USD/person so it wasn´t that bad. What was bad though was the condition of the landing strip in Rurrenabaque. I have never been afraid of flying but bumping our 23-passenger plane down onto a narrow dirt strip in the middle of the jungle was enough to make me bury my face into my hands and hope for the best. Fortunately we made it but only to step off the plane and instantly be dripping in sweat. (It is impossible to stay smelling good here!) This, however, is where Braeden and ... read more

This blog is a composite of our time in Rurrenabaque, which was split by a five-day excursion to the nearby Serere conservation area. Part I We disembarked in Rurrenabaque (or Rurre as it is called) after our long bus ride from La Paz on the morning of Dec. 31st. I liked it instantaneously - as soon as I got out and smelled the air - and liked it the entire time I was there. Actually, there wasn't much to the place - it was a small, sleepy town in a lush humid rainforest set against the banks of the brown Beni River. There was not much to do there either. Still I felt a strong sense of nostalgia, although I wasn't sure why. Did it remind me of lowland Guatemala? Ometepe? or maybe even Fiji where ... read more

So having skipped the jungle in Ecuador and Peru I finally made it there in Bolivia. The intention was to avoid the 18h bus journey and fly there but due to the rain and the fact that the landing strip in Rurrenabaque is just a field, therefore rendered useless in the rain, I was forced to take the bus. The road was reminiscent of the "Death Road" I'd just cycled and it was quite scary when the bus had to reverse along the side of a huge drop inorder to let other vehicles past (which was fairly often), nevertheless we safely arrived in Rurrenbaque in the pouring rain. We decided to take a day to look round the town and recover from the bus journey before we ventured into the Pampas and the Jungle. After an ... read more

We finally managed to escape La Paz, and flew out to Rurrenabaque, deep in the jungle of the Beni region of Bolivia, flying by light aircraft for 40 minutes and dropping from 4,000 metres above sea level at La Paz airport, down to only a couple of hundred metres in tropically hot and sticky Rurrenabaque. Labding on the bumpy sand-grass runway, we understood why they wouldn’t land there in the rain. We were collected by rickety rural bus and transported into the centre of Rurre and to the office of the Ecolodge to have our briefing for departure the following day by boat deep into the Beni region and the Madidi national park area. We checked into our hotel and wandered out to find some food and see the sights of the town. Rurre is a ... read more

The Amazon rainforest... what a beautiful place. It contains so much life, it’s impossible to ignore it. A world away from the city I live in, which is full of dead concrete, bricks, cement and poor excuses for parks. I yet again was blown away by how rich the rainforest is. This time we went a little more hardcore. Rather than pussyfooting around the jungle in a canoe or on light walks, this time we went deep into the jungle for hours on end, trekking through, following animals. Yet again I got to see my favourite critters, the monkeys. These mischievous little guys really do fascinate me. One way in which we thoroughly witnessed their mischief was when they wouldn’t sit still for a photo. They’d be still until they saw your camera come out. I’m ... read more

Most people arriving for a tour of the Amazon would be well prepared in advance - drink plenty of fluids the night before, get a good nights sleep and brace yourself for the humidity, heat and general uncomfortable ness of Amazon life. Not us. Drink fluids we did the night before, just the wrong type, and lots of the wrong type. And so on the morning of our flight (the night after our hostel trivia quiz and celebratory shots at winning best team name) to Rurrenabaque a small town in the Beni region of North East Bolivia from where we would start our tour of the Amazon, we were hungover to death. Dragging our sorry arses out of the hostel and to the airport, all we could think of was cold diet coke and Mcdonalds. Jess ... read more
