Travel for a while and, with luck, you will come across those 'pinch me' places. Ferdinand Magellan was the first European to come through here in 1520. There were others already here of course. The Yaghan and, a little to the north, the Selk'nam had been around for fair while at that time. And now it is us, plus just a few other tourists. Tierra del Fuego has been, for me, a place synonomous with wild landscapes, even more spectacular seas and heroic deeds since I was a child. A few years ago I read a book about the voyages of Robert Fitzroy and then Charles Darwin on the HMS Beagle. The island at the end of of the world where smoke rises continuously is a place I never thought I would visit. In season, Tierra ... read more

Although we have another mission stop or two, we have now traveled as far South as possible without boarding a boat for Antarctica. Ushuaia, Argentina or as the locals call it; "El fin del mundo" (The End of the World). It snowed a little our first night and it is still Summer here! Just a few photos will have to do because we need to go to sleep early tonight to cross the Magellan Strait and two international borders tomorrow. At the very south in Ushuaia- December 27-December 30 Accomodation matters! Ushuaia is a much bigger city than El Calafate with about sixty thousand people. As we drove along the highway and through the port it was remarkable how underutilized the beauty of the port. Instead of a waterfront street lined with cute shops and coffee houses it's a highway. They do have that street, but it's a block away and it's called St. Martin. Walk it once, maybe twice, but anymore and it gets repetitive. In Ushuaia, we were staying in Cabanas del Beagle. These cabins would be considered majestic tree houses by the imaginative 5 year old. So yeah, it was an awesome tree house for me. I've probably stayed at some 300 some hotels/motels/hostels/B&B and this is was perhaps the most unique. The ... read more

Og endnu hyggeligere, folk broed ud i folkedans - ... read more

Ushuaia is a nice little town nestled on the edge of the Beagle Channel, surrounded by spectacularly beautiful mountains. While there I visited the prison museum where I was able to speak to several model prisoners (see first picture). The Beagle Channel is so named, according to local Yamana indian mythology, because after the extinction of the dinosaurs a pack of hunting dogs appeared from Britain and started to dig for the bones of dinosaurs, which were so much larger than the meagre rations they had had to contend with in their homeland. Details of how they arived at Tierra del Fuego from Britain seem to have been lost in the mists of time. Anyway, they dug a trench from one side of Tierra del Fuego to the other, but unfortunately one night the sea ... read more

Apologies, I know its been weeks but I hope whilst I've been enjoying the delights of Chile & Argentina you've been keeping well. Whilst you've all been busily going about your day to day I was as usual, clocking up & counting down the miles towards the southern most tip of the America's. Prior to getting back on the road I had the small matter of a three week delay in Santiago, Chile to deal with whilst the bike recovered from the trauma of Bolivia combined with some amazingly fragile BMW engineering. I wasn't blessed with patience but luckily Santiago is a sweet city to get stuck in & the hostel we stayed at had a lot of interestingly entertaining people who kept me amused & smiling all the while. The repairs cost a mere $1700, ... read more

Stanik ... read more

Rano sme mali celkom problem kupit jedlo a vodu, vsetko bolo pozatvarane, vlada sa rozhodla dopriat ludom karneval a vyhlasila tri dni volna. Neskor sme sa vybrali na navstevu narodneho parku Tierra del Fuego /Ohnova zem/ a ako dopravny prostriedok sme pouzili taxik - nechodili tam ziadne autobusy a museli by sme slapat asi 15 km cez, ako nas varovali na turistickych informacia, stvrt so zlymi psami. Najprv sme kracali cez hlavne bukovy les, plny povalanych stromov a pasucich sa koni. Postupne sme zacali stupat vyssie a vyssie a videli coraz viac stitov a ladovcov. Nasou prvou zastavkou bola Laguna Caminante a potom nas cakal najtazssi usek - prechod cez Paso de la Oveja - oveckine sedlo. Cele okolie bolo pokryte kamenmi roznych tvarov a farieb /asi hlavne skridlica/, vyzeralo to zvlastne, ako v inom svete. ... read more
