AT SEA - JANUARY 24 Well, another day at sea. Weather mostly good, we go from part sun to mild showers as we move north, temperature slowly rising, seas moderate but not a lot of pictures today. No more ice bergs or notable wild life sightings, just some birds. Thus I am reduced to taking pictures of the horizon, sunset (such as it was), the full moon and my life boat. I haven’t been on land for seven days and another sea day tomorrow. Finished reading Killing Kennedy on my Kindle. I found it very interesting and well written. Good news; I can wear my slacks without a belt. Bad news; I can wear my slacks without a belt. I had dinner at the Pinnacle Grill. Great food, great service, fantastic wine. No wonder my belt ... read more

Tierra del fuego where the andes finally meet the sea has become known as el fin del mundo only Antartica lies beyond some 100o kms away. The end of the world and everywhere you see it from the last train to be ridden to the last beer to be drunk a lesson in marketing!!! It is made up of a main island and several smaller ones divided between Argentina and chile and is separated from the rest of South America by the straits of magellan. It is so named because when ferdinand Magellan discovered it in 1520 he saw a series of fires along the coastline as the indigenous indians tried to warn their fellow peoples of the dangers to come , and how right they were. We flew to the city of Ushuaia gateway to ... read more

GLACIER ALLEY, BEAGLE CHANNEL, USHUAIA AND TIERRA del FUEGO NATIONAL PARK - January 18. Wow! Spectacular! The Beagle Channel sail through Glacier Alley was worth the trip alone. Amazing scenery. We saw eight glaciers and even a rainbow at one of them. The narrator provided expert commentary which enriched the experience tremendously. I left the scenery for a short time and attended a future cruise presentation and then a cooking demonstration on a vegetarian wild mushroom, spinach and feta cheese strudel with Thai red curry sauce. The sample was very good. I am now in the harbor at Ushuaia waiting for my tour to be called. The sun rises here at 5:28 and sets at 9:27. The sun is trying hard to shine through and it occasionally succeeds. Temperature is now 57 degrees and wind speed ... read more

In the morning we found ourselves cruising down Glacier Alley. On our west-to-east traverse, all of the glaciers appeared on our portside, so in the early morning all we had to do was open the drapes to see the scenery pass by our Lanai cabin door and foot to ceiling windows. We booked the cruise over one eighteen months ago, and we are very happy with the upgrade offer we got. There were penguins along the shoreline that were spotted by the crew, and some sea lions. One passenger reported seeing a flying penguin skimming above the water, but our exploration director assured us that what this passenger saw was really a southern cormorant. I was so busy trying to catch up with the blogs for the past two days, we sort of missed the sit-down ... read more

Like a bat out of hell I was supposed to be gone when the morning came, but alas, I slept through my alarm and woke up three hours late. Not a great start to my Antarctic adventure, but then, this is why I booked an extra day to get down there - phew! Yes, my last night at the hostel in Santiago was a little later than expected. A great BBQ of chorizo sausages and very tasty chicken naturally went hand in hand with monton de cervezas (Google translate tells me this means "lot's of beers", which is largely accurate), and with some rum to finish things off there was really little chance of paying heed to my alarm; I awoke to find it clutched in my hand under my pillow. Thankfully the airline was most ... read more

Over the years I had wondered once or twice how difficult and costly it would be to go to Antarctica. I never looked into and never really considered it to be achievable. It just wasn't on the radar. I can tell you now that it’s within more people’s grasp than you might think. The way it began was fairly innocuous. I met two different people in Santiago who had recently been to Antarctica. After speaking with them and listening to their stories I decided to do a quick internet search into costs for the hell of it. I looked up the companies they recommended to me but I could not find any ‘deals’ that were supposedly available. Everything was full price. I either wasn't finding the right companies, or there were no deals. After a couple ... read more

Up early (6 am). In the night, the ship has entered the Beagle Channel from the east, and it docks in Ushuaia, Argentina about 7 pm. We are off the boat and on a bus tour by 8. Our destination is Tierra del Fuego National Park, about 15k away from the city. And once again we are blessed to have a gorgeous sunny day with light variable clouds, a rarity in these parts. The park was created in 1960 to protect the area spanning the southern tip of the Andes Mountains. The mountains run east/west here; the Andes actually extend out eastward right into the ocean to form the Falklands, South Georgia and the other islands of the south Atlantic, and then swing around in an s-shape under the ocean to emerge as the backbone of ... read more

Ushuaia lies on the shores of the Beagle Channel at the southernmost tip of the Americas, it’s the most southerly city on the Island of Tierra del Fuego and is as far south as roads go on earth – giving the city its apt nickname of “the city at the end of the world”. Tierra del Fuego is a large island separated from mainland South America by the Magellan Straits, ‘The Land of Fire’ is mainly in Chile, but 30% of it, including Ushuaia belong to Argentina. It’s an odd town to drive into, with the spectacular Fuegan Andes peaks that ring the city contrasting against 100’s of shipping containers stacked up messily on the dock of the industrial port. With the rain pelting down and the peaks of the Andes hidden in cloud the city ... read more

The first bit of good news is that we are here at all, period….. So far, so good, regarding the Argentinians asking this British-registered ship to stay the Hell out of its waters. We have been asked in no uncertain terms by the Captain to refrain from wearing anything referring to the “Falkland Islands” while in this country. We are seriously in the southern latitudes now, as sunrise is at 0530 and sunset is close to 2330. Our tour guide told us yesterday about the “winter depression” suffered by people down here, just like up in the high northern latitudes. It has affected our sleeping patterns just in these few days, and it feels weird to be on the sun deck at 0900 with the sun almost directly overhead, but it neither actually rises in the ... read more
