El Chalten is a National Park and in order to get here we travelled on a bus which took 4 and a half hours and was the coldest bus in the world (I had my fleece jacket, hat, gloves and was still cold!!!) and also the bumpiest bus in the world. The road consisted of mostly a mud an holes everywhere!!! Great fun/NOT!!! However the El Chalten is beautiful, it is a national park and they have some hostels a few shops and a few houses in the middle of the park which is sourrounded by mountains. It felt like we were in the Antartica here as it was snowing and cold. So our first day consisted of eating loads and drinking loads of wine! The 10 of us are managing our budgets fantastically as we ... read more

After getting on our bus at 5am, all 10 of us fell sound asleep! In Argentina there are like very few choices of main roads to take, and a main road consists of like gravel road and there is no scenery its just nothing everywhere for like 14 hours! So good to have a night bus and sleep. However the route to El Calafate means we have to go into Chile and so we were all wakened up and marched off the bus in order to get our passports stamped by border control departing Argentina and then 20 mins late the passport control, for arriving in Chile. Why do passport control people all look so scary!!! Nikki even got in trouble from them and was told to wake up!!!! After the dogs have a good sniff ... read more

Leaving Torres del Paine in a cloud of dust, it was norte to El Calafate and officially 'Argentina' where unlike Chile; prices are mas barrato (cheaper) and the people have a european sophistication, its a real contradiction but I can dig it. El Calafate is a town out in the middle of no(patagonia)where and its growing fast! Why you ask? well, Glacier 'Perito Moreno' thats why. Watching this puppy calve off bits of itself is an awesome sight, From the comfort of the ferry, gaping at the 60 odd meter high 100 odd meter deep glacier is great. Watching and waiting until...'Bam!'tonnes of the densist, most pure crystal ice explodes into the glacial waters, causing waves that rock your world and the boat. Unforgetable. Same day off to El Chalten to hike Fitz Roy, go camping ... read more

We saw a poster on ice trekking and ice climbing in our hostel and we decided to give it a try! But then we had to first trek for 3 hours, traverse across a river and trek for another 1.5hr to get to the glacier. Then after ice trekking and ice climbing, we´ll take the same way back. Guess the chance of walking on the glacier is just too tempting that we decided to still go for it despite having returned from our 2 camping trip with blisters and aches the day before. Had to start trekking before the sun rise. The first part of the trek was pretty steep and the ang mos in our group walk so fast that we were chasing after their footsteps. Then, we had to traverse over a 30m wide ... read more

Only a 5 hour journey to El Calafate including the annoying border crossings again, so not a bad journey. Also had the overly jolly Spanish women from the Torres tour on the bus too. Arrived around lunch time and luckily the hostel I wanted to stay in was represented at the bus station ready to take me to the hostel! Excellent! Grand new hostel so great rooms, all 4 people with ensuite toilet, shower and washbasin, all separate. Kind of chalet like with all rooms in an outdoor section leading back to the main house. Went for a wander and have lunch, very bad service! Then booked my ice treking tour and a bus out. I had already heard the nightmare of leaving El Calafate due to Ruta 40 being closed for winter. Went for a ... read more

Went to El Chalten after spending at few days at Calafate. Just when we thought that it would be quite some time before we would camp again, we were tempted by the pictures taken at sunrise of Mt Fitz Roy taken by a gp of Israeli guys. We decided to camp 1 night at Parque National Los Glacier in El Chalten. El Chalten is 4 hrs away from Calafate and there´re really nothing other than mountains surrounding small little quiet town. As the climbing season is over in a few days, there´re very few travellers and many shops haved closed for the season. The mountains are so near that we could just walk like 400m and start trekking into the mountains. So we grabbed our rented camping equipment and trekked up 3 hours to the campsite. ... read more
