From city to jungle to desert to mountains to glaciers, Argentina is amazing.
I knew that I had booked a ‘nicer’ hotel in El Calafate but I had no idea how nice- if we could have moved in forever, we would have. When we walked in to our massive room and looked out the window at the amazing view of Lago Argentino, I never wanted to leave!
There wasn’t a lot to do in El Calafate but we didn’t care, we were there for Perito Moreno! 5km wide, 60m above sea level, up to 100m below sea level, and 250 km
2, this massive ice block is an incredible beast of nature. Perito Moreno is a stable glacier, meaning that it freezes as much as it melts, therefore it is not receding like most glaciers. Being from Canada, you would think that I would have been to a glacier before but this was going to be my first! Binnson, on the other hand, has been to the ice fields in Jasper but he was still excited to see this one. One of these days, we will have to complete some more touristy attraction-type-stuff together in Canada and maybe even write
a blog about it 😊.
After a day of kicking it around town, checking out a couple of things and taking some pictures, we signed up for a tour with Hielo y Adventura and were off to the glacier. They dropped us off at the first stop on the North side where all of the tourists come to run along the balconies and get pictures of different angles of the glacier. It was a bit windy and spitting rain off and on as we stared at the enormity of the scenery before us. Cracks as loud as thunder echoed throughout the area as pieces of ice would suddenly snap off the face of the glacier and drop to the water creating a spectacular scene, it seemed like every time we left an area the thunderous sound would strike again. As we went to sit in a shelter to eat lunch, it started to rain harder and the wind picked up but luckily for us, we had taken all the pictures we could handle and were safely inside the shelter. We hung out there for a little while longer enjoying the view before we hopped back on the bus to
the next location.
The bus took us to the boat launch where we departed to the South side of the glacier and got yet another marvelous view of the glacier. We pulled onto the shore across the lake and met up with our guides who led us to their huts to put on our crampons, next stop – trekking on the glacier! We had so much fun walking up and down the surface of the glacier while our guides led the way to make sure we didn't end up falling into the big deep blue crevasses. Binnson even filled up his water bottle in a flowing stream of water on the ice, it was really really really cold but delicious. After 90 minutes of trekking, the guides led us to a surprise bar on the ice where we enjoyed a whiskey on the freshly chipped rocks. Following our theme of the day of great timing with the weather, the wind picked up and some rain drops began to fall just as we were getting off the glacier.
Ahhhhhh, back to the hotel for a nice hot tub after a long day at the glacier, perfection.
From city
to jungle to desert to mountains to glaciers to.... penguins! Stay tuned!
