ITALIANO!
Any cars coming?!
ENGLISH!
Following Corrientes we arrived by overnight bus to Salta, a large city in Northwest Argentina. We decided to stay 3 nights here to enjoy the Andean atmosphere and recharge our batteries before perhaps a drop in standard in Bolivia.
After arriving Philip decided that it was time to go shopping for a fleece as we had been checking on the internet and could see that in some parts it is -8 at night! So
we went to an outdoor clothing shop and bought some clothes for the next few weeks.
On the second day we decided to go on a tour to Cachi, a town about 200km west of Salta. The trip was fantastic with our guide explaining to us the importance of Salta in Inca times and after when the Spanish conquered the region. Its location in the fertile Lerma Valley made it important for supplying food to mining villages throughout the province. The trip involved passing through Los Cardones National Park which is the second largest area of cactus' in the world after Mexico.
One night on recommendation from a guy we met on Ilha Grande we went to Viejo Jacks, a restaurant in Salta famous for its Argentinian steaks. Chiara was very impressed by her bife de chorizo (sirloin steak) but was only disappointed she doesn´t have a photo for the blog. It was huge and so tender. The best (and only) steak she ever had!!
Tilcara
We left Salta to go north to Tilcarra 2700 metres above sea level. This was a very picturesque place of about 3000 people high in the Andes. We met a French
Canadian girl and 2 Swiss French girls on in our hostel and went for dinner with them on our first nights (Llama steaks are the plate of choice here!)
The next day we decided to see another Garganta del Diablo - except this time on horseback. The sight was 8km away and the only options of reaching it was by hiking or horseback. So the five of us along with our guide left at about 3 o clock for the journey. The scenery along the way was superb with high mountain peaks, deep ravines, and a dry desert like atmosphere. It was a fine day until on the way back 2 dogs frightened Chiara's horse and it went a bit mad. Like an Argintianian gaucho (female) Chiara fought bravely with the beast but could not hold on. She fell off, but the fall was not too bad because when she fell she was holding the horse around the neck!! With no serious injury just a couple of bruises and applause from her fellow riders and guide for her efforts we were fine to leave Tilcara the next day.
We left Tilcarra to go north to the Argentinian town
of La Quiaca where we walked across the border into Bolivia. We then got the train to Tupiza where we stayed for 2 nights before going to the Salar de Uyuni which will be the focus of our next update.
