We crossed the border from Chile into Argentina and the lady at the border control desk said, “Sorry”. That is for knocking Australia out of the world Cup. She wasn’t sorry. Then we continued to a small town called Villa la Angostura. The locals just call it Villa and with an Argentine accent that sounds more like Vishya. Villa is a mountain hideaway that is a snow bunnies’ hangout in the ski season. The rooves have steep pitches, so that they don’t cave in from the weight of snow and the architecture in general resembles that of other ski towns. Think log cabins, chimneys and double glazed windows. The centre of town is very neat and tidy but if you wander a few streets either side of the main thoroughfare you will see dirt roads and ... read more

After breakfast we check out of La Posta del Cazador, which is a relief as it’s dark and stuffy and full of dead things (the door handles and light fittings are made of antlers). The bed was so uncomfortable I spent half the night contemplating sleeping in the car. This morning we are returning down the route of 7 lakes to Villa la Angostura. First, a visit to La Pastera Museo del Che. It’s a tenuous link; Che Guevara spent 2 nights in this barn in 1952. But it’s an interesting little museum. We drive south stopping at various viewpoints over lakes and waterfalls along the way, reaching quaint little La Angostura around lunchtime. We check into our hotel; Marinas Alto Manzano. It’s beautiful. We have a huge room overlooking the lake and the bathroom has ... read more

Our last full day in New Zealand was spent on Waiheke Island, a forty minute ferry ride from Auckland. Waiheke is home to various wineries and craft breweries. We had been recommended Mudbrick for lunch by James Forrester and Harvey Harrison. We were not disappointed. Even I managed the half hour upward stroll to the venue, which afforded great views back to Auckland, The wine and food were excellent. We flew out of Auckland the following day and headed to Chile. Ian & Serena Hodgson were on the same flight having come from Sydney. Of course when you cross the date line you are confronted by strange time things. Firstly we arrived in Santiago five hrs before we left Auckland (10.5 hr flight). Secondly we went from 13 hrs in front of UK to 3 hrs ... read more

Bariloche is located on the southern shore of Lago Nahuel Huapi and is surrounded by stunning mountain peaks and crystal clear waters. In winter Bariloche is a popular ski destination & has a European ski town feel. We stayed in a hostel just off the main square on the 10th floor of an ugly soviet type building but with fantastic views over the town, lakes & mountains, hence the name 'Penthouse'. We climbed to the Cerro Campanario look out with another couple from our hostel. The walk wasn't particularly difficult but it did give us amazing 360 degree views over the lakes around Bariloche. It helped the weather was in our favour. The following day we cycled a 37 km loop around Circuito Chico and Colonial Suiza. This was for two reasons: one it was a ... read more

Day two in Bariloche was just Lucy and I again, as Stella had headed off to Ushuaia, the ends of the earth! We'll meet up with her again on Tuesday in Buenos Aires. The day started off with a heavy mist over the lake and the town in the morning, so we decided to devote ourselves to chocolate tasting research in town, before heading off to Cerro Campanario. We got slightly distracted on our chocolate tasting mission by a gorgeous handbag shop called Prune , and each ended up with two new Argentinian handbags. Nice work! We then made our way to the famous Mamuschka for morning tea, chocolate purchasing and some tasting. By the time we finished the mist was clearing, so plenty of time to explore the town in the sunshine. It made for ... read more

... the truth is I never left you. Well technically thats a lie, seeing as I have stamps in my passport that say I left for 2 weeks to visit Chile. But you get the idea, and I'm now back in the land of steak. Except I'm now camping in the land of steak, which means that steak is kind of off the menu. At least for the time being. Otherwise I could have called this entry steaks and lakes, which would have had a nice ring to it. From Petrohue, we got a bus to Puerto Varas, intending to get a bus crossing the border from there. Unfortunately, we were told that there were no buses with space left for 2 days. This presented a problem, but we decided to plow on, and get a ... read more

Like most travellers, the Lonely Planet is very much our compass for travelling in foreign land. And when I read in it that a place is "almost achingly beautiful" you know I´m going to check it out...and they were so right! And, like so many things in life, we were guided here by a series of mishaps...and I´m so thankful for them because I can´t imagine having spent the last couple of days anywhere else. As for these mishaps let me advise you (as if I need to!) don´t rent a car from someone whose language you only understand about 30% of... but even more importantly don´t ever, ever rent a car from Buenos Aires! Ugh! But perhaps I should start at the beginning... Buenos Aires-wow what a bustling city! We got there on a day ... read more
