By the last week of August we found ourselves in a mini snow drought in Las Lenas. Worse still the temperatures had risen dramatically and the winds were up. Days were being spent getting up early and getting in some fun slush runs and then heading home before the mountain turned into cascading water with terrible dust storms that raged up the valleys. Still it was pleasant enough to sit out in the sun of an afternoon, sheltered by our house from the worst of the wind and down a few cold cervezas sitting in shorts and t-shirts. Mijic was starting to get a little antsy though.. it was his second last week and the resort had failed to deliver on the promises made during his first week of powder here. Meanwhile I had planned a ... read more

Well, I know it took me a long time again to write this blog-entry and I'm already almost half a year behind, but ... there are just too many better things to do, than sit in an Internet-cafe and write blog-entries ... and as I didn't get complaints, I don't feel too motivated, to change this :-) So I continued my journey on Wednesday the 25th of March in the morning and crossed from Chile to Argentina again. In the bus we got coffee in glass-cups, that was some kind of strange :-) Villa la Angostura is nice, but very touristic, so I decided to "just" have a look at it and continue the same day to San Martin de Los Andes. We arrived at an time, where the most restaurants already closed for Siesta, so ... read more

We continued onward to San Martin de los Andes (plainly San Martin from here onwards). We were slowly making our way towards Buenos Aires, to meet LM´s dad and Karen. We had ample time, so we took it. San Martin de los Andes is a smaller version of Bariloche and is much more tranquil. The village is also built on the shore of a big and beautiful lake; houses are made of stone and wood and the streets are lined with many trees which makes for a charming village. The plumb trees make for messy pavements, though. At the bus station we were greeted by a local that rents out rooms in his house during the summer months (not a bad way to make extra money). He was very adamant that we stay with him and ... read more

So after 2 weeks of soaking up the deep blue lakes of Bariloche, I am off to Mendoza. My second week was highlighted by the fact that I switched language schools: I spent the week at a school called La Montana, which was very organized and also ran activities in the afternoons. It was a relief to have a schedule and to be around other students. Classes were Monday to Friday from 9 - 1, and by the end of the week, although it still felt like a struggle to communicated, I noticed that I was understanding the general gist of just about everything that was said to me - even by Juan (at home) who had a very thick accent. Last Sunday I hiked up the Cerro Lopez with a friend from Calgary (another Spanish ... read more

So here I am in San Carlos de Bariloche (apparently this town is not an option on this blog so I chose San Martin de Los Angeles, the next closest town!) in the heart of Argentina´s Lake District. I will probably be here for 2 weeks studying Spanish at a school called "Spanish in the Mountains" and staying in a family homestay situation. It took me 23 hours to get here on the bus!!!!!!!!!! I rode in a "semi-cama" seat which means that the seat reclines halfway back, and there is a foot rest. But believe me, after 23 hours it ain´t no picnic. I am now frantically trying to reconsider the rest of my travel plans in order to avoid similarly long bus rides. But there are such great distances in Argentina, I think I ... read more

(Written by Mark) We met up with my cousin Adam and his friend Jay, and after a fun night in Bariloche, headed out in our rented Chevy Corsa sedan for a trip on the Ruta 7 Lakes, a mountain road connecting San Martin de los Andes and San Carlos de Bariloche through 2 connected Parques Nacionales - Lanin and Nahuel Huapi. This was our first rented car trip in the area, and it was only the second time the two city slickers from NYC had been camping. Adventure was in the cards as we selected a remote lake and hot spring for our first night's destination, Lago Queñi and the associated Termas de Queñi. The road to the lake was hard to find. After driving the long way around to avoid a 4 wheel drive ripio ... read more

14th January, Pucon y San Martin, Argentina We got a 6 hour bus to the lake district of Argentina.. We have to be in Buenos Aires for the spanish classes starting soon, so we thought we´d have a few days in the lake district 1st. While waiting for the coach, i needed the loo, so had to run back to the hostel (i coudnt use the one at the bus station as jake had spent the last of our money on bloody pastries!).. back at the hostel, the owner called over to me, i thought he was going to start questioning me about using the loo after we´d checked out, but much to my embarrassment he walked me over to a pile of washing, which was obviously from our room, on top of the towels, he ... read more

Lakes , lakes and more lakes. Well after these 18 hours in 2 busses arived to San Martin. Could be Interlaken, but then with spanish spoken. Beautiful village, nice walks and lakes allover. Rented a car and went to discover the Siete Lagos (seven lakes), Camping at a beautiful lake with only 10 other tents or so, and wonderful bird as our neighbour. From San Martin 4 hours bus to Bariloche, again huge lake, great mountains and very Schweits. NOw it was time for some work and we rented a bike for two days, and went to bike in the mountains with all these lakes, with all camping equipment. I am still amazed of us :-). We took a walk in a beautiful forest and finished in a very simple camping at Colonia Suisa (again, Suisa ... read more

Le ... read more
