Misiones Travel Blogs

Background: Following independence from Spain in 1816, Argentina experienced periods of internal political conflict between conservatives and liberals and between civilian and military factions. After World War II, a long period of Peronist authoritarian rule and interference in subsequent governments was followed by a military junta that took power in 1976. Democracy returned in 1983, and numerous elections since then have underscored Argentina's progress in democratic consolidation.

At the airport...
At the airport...
In the airport, which was almost empty, we´re waiting for our plain to go to Iguazu.
Hooray We´re off on an Adventure!! here we are in the tiny little city of puerto iguazu. The town is small, with an itty bitty night life... but charming none the less. I am just guessing, but from what we´ve seen probably 75% of the transportation that the people here use is motor bike, moped, or scooter! It´s a little scary, with the job that I have, to see how many of these people do not use helmets! And the ones I have noted, I haven´t recognized any of the brands. The buses seem pretty safe, and when you take one [View Full Entry]

Garganta el Diablo
Garganta el Diablo
Devil´s Throat from Brazil

Day 148: Puerto Iguazu I woke up rather early this morning and so went for a walk in town to get some breakfast and try and find an internet cafe that was open on Easter Sunday so that I could check in online (a bit optimistic, but at least I got breakfast), before getting a taxi to the domestic airport and boarding a plane for Iguazu a few hours later. The flight was only two hours and with the plane half empty, the journey wasn't too stressful at all. Disembarking at the other end, the sweltering heat was a little beyond [View Full Entry]

La Garganta del Diablo
Not suitable for canoeists
More waterfalls (and most of them had names)

Waterfall photos from Iguazu National Park, both the Brazilian and Argentinian sides. I took a second trip to Iguacu / Iguazu - the most spectacular waterfalls I have ever seen - the first trip was back in November - secretly - I wasn't happy with the photographs - with a new camera (Nikon D300) and it's first serious outing - I messed up the settings, left the ISO on the value I'd used for a night trip to the Itaipu dam. So a revisit was worth it - this time with a circular polarizing filter, a tripod and a lot more [View Full Entry]

So next morning i got up and decided id save some cash for Buneos Aires and as paraguy was not spectacular unles you heded north to the jungle i decided to skip the expense of just going for another passport stamp...lol, again it was up for a great brekkie and then i decided as it was so hot to do some hand washing and save a few pesos. So i did that and then hung out by the wonderful hostelpool chatting to the dutch girl mieke before she headed off in the afternoon for a bus to Buneos Aires (14 hours [View Full Entry]

Argentine Falls

So after i left off on my last blog, basically i was not all that happy with the hostel and the were not many people around and those who were kept to themselves and i did try striking up conversations, i suppose its one of those things sometimes with traveling solo, but in the end a nice Argentine guy who lives in germany now and was back in Argentina on holiday started talking to me and gave me some of his beer. The next morning was bright an early start of 5.45 am and i had mango for brekkie which was [View Full Entry]

Brazilian Side Of The Falls
Brazilian Side Of The Falls
Brazilian Side Of The Falls

We decided to go first to the Argentinian side of the Falls where you get better close-up views of the individual waterfalls. We took a boat right under the falls and then walked around the whole park. Iguazu Falls makes Niagara look like a dripping tap. There are so many of them and so much water. The park itself is also very beautiful and home to lots of pretty butterflies and loads of geckos. We were lucky enough to be there on one of the 5 nights that they run full moon tours out to the falls at 10pm so we [View Full Entry]

I almost feel like I don't need to write anything here, except maybe one word - 'Wow'. The photos say it better than any words could. But seeing as this is a blog, I suppose I should write something... Iguazu is one of the main tourist draws of Argentina, if not all of South America, and it's very easy to see why. They're around 3km wide, and are made up of around 270 individual falls, with the main one being the Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat in English). I think they're wider than Victoria Falls, but as it's not just one [View Full Entry]

Garganta del Diablo
More falls
The falls in their setting

Having got back from Uruguay in the afternoon on Monday we went to the bus station to get our bus up to Iguazu Falls. The Brazilian bus company didn't exactly put on their most luxurious coach for us - it was pretty much like a National Express coach with a foot rest thrown in as well as some very appetising food. About an hour into the journey we had our appetising 'dinner service' which was 2 cold and greasy empanadas and a breaded filet of some kind and a can of 7-up which I didn't really even want to drink because [View Full Entry]

Waking up on the bus!

FREBRUARY 19, 2008 - My birthday, my 41st birthday, and I went to Iguazu Falls - Cataratas del Iguazu! A place I've wanted to see for 4 years and it was well worth the wait. What a way to spend my birthday. Note: For those of you reading this that had no idea of my age…SURPRISE! It surprises me everyday, why should I be alone! I plan to be this young at heart forever while being proud of being in my wonderful 40’s. I must admit I was getting a little pre-occupied with what I thought a 40 year old was [View Full Entry]

Cataratas del Iguazu (115)
Cataratas del Iguazu (109)
Cataratas del Iguazu (100)

Well, we finally wrapped up in Bariloche. Our last weekend involved our Saturday blogging to you all, and then on Sunday, we took a little stroll to the Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi, beside Lago Guttereiz, our local lake and took a walk to see the little waterfalls that were in there. We had thought about hiking up to Refugio frey that Sunday with Peter, a guy from the Netherlands from our school who was looking for company. However, the trek was supposed to be about 16km, so 32 km return from our Cabaña, and I wasnt sure whether I was fit [View Full Entry]
