Background: Following independence from Spain in 1816, Argentina experienced periods of internal political conflict between conservatives and liberals and between civilian and military factions. After World War II, a long period of Peronist authoritarian rule and interference in subsequent governments was followed by a military junta that took power in 1976. Democracy returned in 1983, and numerous elections since then have underscored Argentina's progress in democratic consolidation.

Argentinian side. Climbing on the railings wasn't really allowed. Something about the 500 ft sheer drop behind me
We are now in Argentina and have completed our first country, Brazil. The last two days were spent at the largest waterfalls in the world! We visited the Brazillian side first and were staying at a youth hostel 12 km from Foz de Iguaçu. It had its own swimming pool and was really good. That night we went into town to see what was going on. On the way a Brazillian guy who worked at the falls got on and we started chatting. He said he lived close to where our hostel was and if we wanted to come round the [View Full Entry]

It is a little known fact that when I get a fever, I become a giant ogre twice the size of Eden and can barely fit on a double bed.
The following are excerpts from my journal over the last four days or so: 24 April - Monday 11am. Our passports were not exit-stamped upon leaving Brasil. This is a formality that is apparently often skipped, but another English-speaking tourist on the bus last night told us we'll probably run into problems trying to get back into Brasil later without the exit stamp. So we went back to the border this morning to take care of it. Not a problem, despite a wasted morning. But it's okay! We're both healthy and should have no problem making up for lost time at [View Full Entry]

We´re actually back in Europe now, flew to Madrid from Rio yesterday. We´re here for three nights, before we fly to Paris on Thursday. So we have a bit of catching up to do on the blog now. Iguazu is all about the photos so I don´t plan to keep you long this time! It´s well worthwhile popping across the Argentine/Brazilian border to see both sides as we did. On the Argentine side you are really close to the falls wheras on the Brazilian side you are across the river with a better panoramic view. Argentine side We flew from Buenos [View Full Entry]

The water before it gets to the falls!
More falls

water water everywhere...
water water everywhere...
maybe we could just lower our water bottles into the stream to fill them up? boy, why didn´t i think of that?
today, kyle learned several valuable lessons: 1. iguazu falls is very awesome. 2. just because you're at a waterfall does not mean you will absorb water by osmosis. 3. walking around in the hot sun all day with very little water puts you on the fast track to many nasty things, such as kidney infections. follow these lessons up with two trips to the local hospital, $20 worth of medical care (i shake my fist at you, expensive united states), and one shot in the butt, and you have us stuck in puerto iguazu for 4 days. why can't we get [View Full Entry]

The boat trip was definitely fun. Taken just before I got wet.
DA FALLS It was time to see the real deal. See what all the buzz is about. So I booked myself a trip to the falls for 4 days. As I arrived I met a couple of american girls and one argentine woman so I decided to join them for the trip. They were going all out for the falls so I decided to do the extras as well such as the optional tours that were not included in the normal package. They were staying in Sheraton...and me, well a hostel. But it turned out to be an all star hostel [View Full Entry]

just returned from iguazu falls on the border of argentina and brazil. we spent one day on the argentina side which allowed us to come extremely close to the waterfalls, plus take a boat that dunked us under. we spent another day on the brazil side which gave us a more panaramic view of the falls. both were AMAZING! words cannot do it justice -- take a look at our pictures in the 'gallery' section of our website. enjoy! Culture! We need some culture! People will think we´re ignoramuses if its all mountains and no culture, so off we went to San Ignacio to see some ruins and a poets house. The ruins at San Ignacio Mini are the remains of the Jesuits attempts to instill (Emily wont let me use a stronger word!) Christianity into the locals in the 17th century, and very pretty they are too. After a morning at the ruins we took what we thought would be a short stroll (don´t believe the guide book, get a taxi!) to the house of the poet and novelist [View Full Entry]

¡Hola! After deciding that we'd learnt enough Spanish to get by, we jumped on a bus to Puerto Iguazu, which is the gateway to the Iguazu Falls. The overnight bus took 16 hours. The journey was a breeze as we travelled "coche cama". I can only liken it to travelling business class. The seats are huge and recline all the way back; you get served food and drinks and you can even watch DVDs. The Iguazu Falls are one of the most impressive, jaw-dropping sights that I've witnessed. Their sheer noise, power, volume and beauty was all very humbling. I won't [View Full Entry]
