Background: Following independence from Spain in 1816, Argentina experienced periods of internal political conflict between conservatives and liberals and between civilian and military factions. After World War II, a long period of Peronist authoritarian rule and interference in subsequent governments was followed by a military junta that took power in 1976. Democracy returned in 1983, and numerous elections since then have underscored Argentina's progress in democratic consolidation.

San Antonio De Areco (23 June 2006) The mellow town of San Antonio De Areco, which is ground zero for Gaucho culture is located about two hours drive from the centre of Buenos Aires. Nestled in the Northern Pampas of the province, San Antonio De Areco dates from the early 18th century. We decided to spend a night, whilst still in BA, at one of the historic Estancias (ranch) to sample the life of the Gaucho, which defines the Argentinean culture. We chose to stay at the beautiful El Ombu. After meeting our hostess and some fellow visitors over a welcome [View Full Entry]

Deciding that an extended stay in Bariloche was not worth it, we hopped on our longest bus ride yet—20 hours—to Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. Let’s just say that Cruz del Norte offered us our best bus ride of the trip! Any bus trip that starts off with whisky on the rocks, beer and wine during dinner, and a dessert of champagne, can’t be bad. We arrived at the hectic Buenos Aires bus station and secured lodging for a few nights. A few days later, we took our second airplane of the trip to Puerto Iguazu—the launching point to visit [View Full Entry]

Ihmismassaa torilla pelin jalkeen
Ihmisia torilla heiluttamassa kasiaan ja lippujaan. Halailemassa toisiaan, kaikkihan on tanaan kavereita keskenaan - Argentiinahan voitti pelin.
Karistimme Brasilian polyt jaloista ja saavuimme Argentiinan lauantaina 24.6, eli silloin kuin suurin osa teista siella Suomessa nautti Juhannuksenvieton aiheuttamista hyvanolontunteista. Bussimme saapui Posadas´n kaupunkiin noin viisi minuuttia ennen Argentiina-Meksiko neljannesvalieraottelun alkua. Suomessa saattoi tapahtuma ehka jaada joltakulta juhannushumun jalkimainingeissa huomaamatta, mutta taalla Argentiinassa se ei todellakaan jaanyt huomaamatta. Palataan nyt kuitenkin viela saapumiseemma Posadas´in. Yksi reppumatkailun vaistamattomista asioista tapahtui meille taalla. Tiedatte [View Full Entry]

On Monday morning I arrived at 9 am in Puerto Iguazu (a small town with not a lot to offer) after a 20 hour bus ride from Rosario. From town I hopped in a taxi and headed over to my hostel. I'm staying at the Hostel Inn, which is lovely, huge, and actually has a slightly disappointing staff (since most of them refuse to speak spanish with a native english speaker, and a couple that seem to not even know spanish)! I feel like I am staying in a tropical paradise getaway. After I got over the shock of the hostel [View Full Entry]

The Iguazu Waterfalls were amazing. Words fail to describe the beauty of this place. The taxi driver who picked us up from the airport took us straight to the Brazilian side of the falls. We didn't have visas so he bribed the border patrol 10 US dollars to let us through. We were there for a few hours and I was really impressed. The weather was beautiful with the sun shining and the blue sky- I didn't want to leave. The Hostel Inn was really the best hostel I've ever stayed in. It was cool and they had a BBQ that [View Full Entry]

Today has been my last day in Argentina, tonight is my last night, I leave for Brazil tomorrow. Despite everything that has happened I am very sad to be leaving, and already planning my return. So what exactly will I miss? Well here is just a short list of the things... 1) Mate. For those of you who know how much tea I drink (none), and coffee(none), and hot drinks generally (rarely), this will probably surprise you a little. Drinking Mate is as much a ritual here as tea drinking back home, with the advantage that it can be drunk almost [View Full Entry]

We caught a LAN flight from Buenos Aires to Puerto Iguazu to see the falls. Even though we missed our flight (yes, there are two airports in Buenos Aires), we got to go to the falls on the first day. THEY WERE AMAZING! Devil's Throat is mindblowing, and being in the rainforest was great after the winter weather in Chile. We stayed in Hostel Guembe which, although it didn't have internet (I've been spoiled by the other hostels), was great because it was only US $6 a night. The water was too low for us to go on the rafting tour [View Full Entry]
