Background: Following independence from Spain in 1816, Argentina experienced periods of internal political conflict between conservatives and liberals and between civilian and military factions. After World War II, a long period of Peronist authoritarian rule and interference in subsequent governments was followed by a military junta that took power in 1976. Democracy returned in 1983, and numerous elections since then have underscored Argentina's progress in democratic consolidation.

Part 2 of 3 of my adventure in the provinces of Misiones and Corrientes : Jesuits Ruins of San Ignacio After our visit of Iguazu Park and its impressive waterfalls, we took an early morning bus to the town of San Ignacio where we would visit the Jesuits ruins of San Ignacio (San Ignacio Mini), one of the several sites remaining in this part of Argentina. Despite the fact that this particular site was originally one of the smallest Jesuit colonies, it is nonetheless today the best preserved ruins. The rich history of those ruins goes beyond religion, politics, economics…it symbolizes [View Full Entry]

Big noise, big water.
Only once you are there, seeing the falls with your own eyes, can you start to imagine what 250 seperate falls look like. It´s just enormous, dramatic and lush. There is one point where they tunble over a 70m cliff and another point (Garganta del Diablo) where I don´t know how much water a second hurtles over a 3km semi circle of rock. When we went the sun did not shine and it rained but the temperature was still pretty steamy. All the paths or catwalks are a good idea to limit the effect on the environment but it means you [View Full Entry]

We did the Brazilian and Argentinian sides, staying in the Youth Hostel near the Brazilian side. They arranged our immigration to Argentina and took us over the border in their crazy converted greenhouse of a bus. [View Full Entry]

So I know this entry is quite delayed but better late than never right. We went to Iguazu directly after Buenos Aires and were only there for one night. I think in her blog, Beth already described the fiasco that took place early Sunday morning in BA as we were trying to leave for Iguazu. I can´t believe I took us to the wrong airport. That is definitly one of the dumber things I´ve done. It was especially bad because on the way there I was even thinking, ¨Hey it´s a good thing we aren´t leaving from the other airport. That [View Full Entry]

Devil´s Throat

Despite an intolerably slow internet connection, I have to do this now, before I get involved in other stuff and totally lose the capability to catch up. I left you after the Pampas adventure... Wednesday 27th September - Rurrenabaque to La Paz. In leaving Rurrenabaque I get to fulfill an ambition. EVERYONE who is foolhardy enough to make the journey to Rurre by road flies back to La Paz. I´m happy I did the bus journey to get here, because only sixteen hours down hellish mountain roads, on a bus full of dog dirt (ok, not full, but you get [View Full Entry]

My second weekend off i ventured up to the north-eastern tip of Argentina to visit the Iguazu Falls. They might not technically be the tallest or the most powerful waterfalls in the world (Niagra and Victoria take those honours), but my god they're spectacular. One of my favourite places in Argentina. I'd seen them in photos and stuff, but still the first sight of them in real life completely knocks you for six. The constant roar of the water, and their immense power and size, and surreal jungle-paradise look of them, amazed me everytime I saw them. I spent my weekend [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Brazil on the 3rd after a very long flight and even longer wait in Sao Paulo airport. Crossed the border from Brazil into Argentina to Puerto Iguazu on the Argentina side to look at the Iguazu falls today. Its Neil´s 23rd Birthday, don´t imagine many people can say they celebrated in two diffirent countries. The Falls are breathtaking, with 275 waterfalls to look at. So we spent the majority of the day walking around the park and getting different views with our tour guide. Firstly, we took a train up to The Devils Throat which is the number [View Full Entry]

yep thats more falls
It has always amazed me that people in times long since past believed in a flat earth. What happens at the edge? Is the edge an endless cliff of jagged and forboding stone and rocks? Perhaps a stream trickles over the edge, or an ocean cascades off into the darkness, joining the unknown realms, and endless mystery of space? Fortunatley some smart guy, some time ago thought it through, and figured out that the earth was infact round (I think he was greek, or english.)...(maybe his name was Alfred Antonopolis)... ...anyway, why do I visit such an abstract topic? The reason [View Full Entry]

Right now I´m in Salta in the north-west of Argentina but I´d better fill you in on Iguazu first (as you can imagine, updating the travelblog isn´t topping the priority list at the moment). The bus ride from Buenos Aires was an interesting experience as we had anticipated Our seats resembled lazyboy recliners and were reasonably comfortable to travel in (much better then the plane, except of course the plane would have got us their in 3hrs but at 5 times the price). On the bus we were served dinner and breakfast and were shown numerous movies throughout the ride. The [View Full Entry]

Iguazu Falls

The rumours of the best hostel in Argentina were luring Debbie to Iguazu Falls, which was destined to be our last chance to see some of South America’s stunning waterfalls. We had seen Angel Falls, the highest in the world at the start of our trip so it seemed fitting to see the largest? widest? nicest? in the world before we left for good. The trip from Uruguay to Iguazu was lengthy and tiring taking 2 overnight buses. We gasped at the heat when we finally go off the bus. After the worse night journey (actually bar one but more on [View Full Entry]
