Misiones Travel Blogs

Background: Following independence from Spain in 1816, Argentina experienced periods of internal political conflict between conservatives and liberals and between civilian and military factions. After World War II, a long period of Peronist authoritarian rule and interference in subsequent governments was followed by a military junta that took power in 1976. Democracy returned in 1983, and numerous elections since then have underscored Argentina's progress in democratic consolidation.

So after i left off on my last blog, basically i was not all that happy with the hostel and the were not many people around and those who were kept to themselves and i did try striking up conversations, i suppose its one of those things sometimes with traveling solo, but in the end a nice Argentine guy who lives in germany now and was back in Argentina on holiday started talking to me and gave me some of his beer. The next morning was bright an early start of 5.45 am and i had mango for brekkie which was [View Full Entry]

Brazilian Side Of The Falls
Brazilian Side Of The Falls

We decided to go first to the Argentinian side of the Falls where you get better close-up views of the individual waterfalls. We took a boat right under the falls and then walked around the whole park. Iguazu Falls makes Niagara look like a dripping tap. There are so many of them and so much water. The park itself is also very beautiful and home to lots of pretty butterflies and loads of geckos. We were lucky enough to be there on one of the 5 nights that they run full moon tours out to the falls at 10pm so we [View Full Entry]

I almost feel like I don't need to write anything here, except maybe one word - 'Wow'. The photos say it better than any words could. But seeing as this is a blog, I suppose I should write something... Iguazu is one of the main tourist draws of Argentina, if not all of South America, and it's very easy to see why. They're around 3km wide, and are made up of around 270 individual falls, with the main one being the Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat in English). I think they're wider than Victoria Falls, but as it's not just one [View Full Entry]

Having got back from Uruguay in the afternoon on Monday we went to the bus station to get our bus up to Iguazu Falls. The Brazilian bus company didn't exactly put on their most luxurious coach for us - it was pretty much like a National Express coach with a foot rest thrown in as well as some very appetising food. About an hour into the journey we had our appetising 'dinner service' which was 2 cold and greasy empanadas and a breaded filet of some kind and a can of 7-up which I didn't really even want to drink because [View Full Entry]

Waking up on the bus!

FREBRUARY 19, 2008 - My birthday, my 41st birthday, and I went to Iguazu Falls - Cataratas del Iguazu! A place I've wanted to see for 4 years and it was well worth the wait. What a way to spend my birthday. Note: For those of you reading this that had no idea of my age…SURPRISE! It surprises me everyday, why should I be alone! I plan to be this young at heart forever while being proud of being in my wonderful 40’s. I must admit I was getting a little pre-occupied with what I thought a 40 year old was [View Full Entry]

Well, we finally wrapped up in Bariloche. Our last weekend involved our Saturday blogging to you all, and then on Sunday, we took a little stroll to the Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi, beside Lago Guttereiz, our local lake and took a walk to see the little waterfalls that were in there. We had thought about hiking up to Refugio frey that Sunday with Peter, a guy from the Netherlands from our school who was looking for company. However, the trek was supposed to be about 16km, so 32 km return from our Cabaña, and I wasnt sure whether I was fit [View Full Entry]

As the Brazilian side of the Iguazu Falls give a more panaromic view we decided to head back across to Brazil first. Again this involved getting off at the boarder crossing as the bus sped away. Fortuntately we met Francesa and Giuseppe from Milan in Italy. Francesa is an interpreter and speaks a rake load of languages. After the border crossing we walked as far as Hotel Carmen rather than wait for a bus to bring us all the way to Foz. This saved about 30 mins at least by my estimation. The falls are amazing - more like a load [View Full Entry]

Wow!

South America » Argentina » Misiones » Puerto Iguazú
Wow is the word for the Iguazu Falls - 275 waterfalls along over 2km of the Iguazu River with borders on Argentina, BRazil and Paraguay. Amazing especially the Garganta del Diablo one which is huge. The falls are bigger than Niagara falls. Stayed in a cool hostel which was more like a resort and had lovely few days. Huge pool and big gardens so perfect for chilling.... although that is all I seem to do these days! Next stop Brazil baby! [View Full Entry]

Iguazú Falls
Iguazú Falls
The third day at the falls, this time looking at the Argentinian side from the Brazilian side.
You never would have thought - two people check on to a flight together, and one bag comes off first, and the other dead last! That was how we arrived at Puerto Iguazú airport. We missed out on the cheap shuttle transfer to town because while we were waiting for Pete's bag the shuttle filled up and left. So we had to pay 20 Reals (about $15) to get to our hostel, not such a good start to the next leg of our trip. We arrived at our hostel on Christmas Eve and were instantly impressed - it used to be [View Full Entry]

The extremes some people will go to for ´that´shot! Us over the Iguazu Falls..!
Give me a minute while I catch my breath. Oh. My. God. This place is the most amazing, jaw-dropping, awe inspiring sight I have EVER SEEN. The Iguazu Falls are on the border of Brazil and Argentina and are 275 waterfalls over 2.7km of the Iguazu River. Some of them are up to 82 metres high. And the water, so much water, comes tumbling over the edge of them like a leap of faith. Try keeping sight of your pooh sticks on these ones! Legend has it that a god planned to marry a beautiful aborigine named Naipí, who fled with [View Full Entry]
