The last time we were in La Quiaca was when we crossed from Bolivia into Argentina for the first time, almost two years ago now. We took a taxi from the border to the bus station, which seemed to take forever, giving us the false impression that it is miles away. In fact, it is quite simple to walk the 20 minutes to and from the border!

That's what we did on arrival at 7.30 am this time, and again at about 8.30 am when we re-entered Argentina. It is extremely cold until the sun warms the air rapidly, and it can soon have you taking off layers of clothing!

Our aim this time was to find the bus to Yavi. There isn't one!! We were told to make our way towards the market where we would find a remis. So that's what we did. What a surprise it was to find so much more to La Quiaca than we had first thought. There are lots of murals on the walls, and some are very good indeed. For some reason I never got the camera out though! The church is quite pretty and unusually for the region, it has

a brick facade and not the normal whitewash.

The old railway area was safe enough during the daylight. We were surprised to see people using the footbridge to cross the disused tracks. Perhaps it was just nostalgic parents showing their kids what it used to be like. Just the other side of the tracks was the market. After asking around we eventually met a remis driver. It's about 18km to Yavi and the fare is Arg$2.50 per person if he gets 4 passengers, or you can save waiting and just pay the full Arg$10. That's what we did and soon we were on our way to Yavi.
