Last night we went to the Sónar Festival, it´s a huge festival in Barcelona, but they through a big party last night as well.
Diplo, who produced the MIA album performed... I also saw this French band called Colder, they sounded like Bloc Party and The Faint... like if those two bands got married and had kids, or if those two bands didn´t get married and still had a kid... the church wouldn´t really approve, but the illegit offspring would be so good at rocking out, that the church would have to give it´s blessing. (The church used to be into Garage and 2-step, but now it only listens to DnB)
ahem.
The best performance of the night was DJ Yoda. He comes from England. He has two vinyl turntables, a powerbook, and two Pioneer DVD decks.
His mixes are crazy-eclectic. He threw in the classic sample ¨The Champ¨by the Mohawks, ¨RockIt¨by Herbie Hancock, and ¨Ring of Fire¨by Cash. I believe that this melange of sounds can only be described as crazy-eclectic. If it stopped here, it would be an excellent performance...
but then add the video component and its just awesome. He put in clips from lots of movies and TV shows, like Weird Science, Donnie Darko, Old School, The Shining, The Simpsons, and SNL.
He would do turntable cuts (scratches) and then do video cuts as well... really neat.
...
So I was really curious as to the electronic instrument that was being played in Colder. So I decided I would just ask the guy who was playing it.
After their set I tried to go backstage. The key to sneaking backstage in a spanish speaking country is speaking spanish poorly.
¨Hola, do you speak ingles¿¨
¨no¨
¨Okay, I have a little español. I work for a compania de music... mi banda es playing, but I don´t have a wristband (point to wrist)... donde get this¿¨
Pretty much I pretended that I was really supposed to be back there, and then he let me look for ¨my band.¨I was in reality looking for ¨free alcohol¨by that I mean, free food... beause backstage areas are known to occasionally have free food.
When I couldn´t find ¨my band¨I decided to look for them elsewhere... so I went to the VIP area, used the same story and got in.
The moral of that story is: it´s fun to try and sneak backstage, but there isn´t much going on back there.
PEACE.
