Yesterday was the first day of our trip and also happened to be the first day of spring in Argentina. We had only just left our hotel when a kindly old gent (the local cobbler) handed Suse a red carnation, which felt like a warm welcome to life in South America.
Every self respecting girl in Buenos Aires was proudly clutching a flower and all the chaps were rushing to the nearest stall to buy flowers for their ladies. The secondry school kids all got the day off and filled the parks along Avenida del Libertador listening to music and sunbathing.
It was pretty hot for the start of spring. It´s going to be sizzling in December, which is the next time that we will pass though here, on our way to Montevideo in Uruguay.
Buenos Aires is a cracking city. It´s a bit more run down (in parts) than I had expected but the architecture is amazing and each neighbourhood has its own feel. I love the bussle of this place. The main street is Avendia 9 de Julio, 16 lanes of motoring mahem running through the centre of the city. This is no place to jaywalk...
Casa RosadaThe seat of the Argentine government. The pink was historically due to it being painted with cow's blood!
The porteños (the inhabitants of Buenos Aires) have all been utterly curteous and have been very patient with our faltering Castellano (which is what Spanish is called in South America). We need to learn a bit more as soon as possible though - we´ve got a 22 hour bus journey tonight up to Salta in the northwest, so that should provide ample opportunity!
OK, we´re heading off to get some empanadas for lunch. Adios for now

Dog mindersQuite a common job in BA. There are dogs (and associated mess) everywhere

Snooz, I see why Tom is on the trip, he is the technical brains behind the adventure, although having witnessed him diving in the pool at 5 am in Portugal I don't hold out much hope. Off to buy a carnation for jackie before she reads this. Looking forward to hearing about your adventure. Lot sof love Ali.
PS: Dad is definitely on the mend and has been walking around the last few days, hopefully will be out of hospital within 10 days. Will keep you posted.
Highways sound hairy but the rest sounds wonderful! Just deep jealousy from this quarter! Have fun x
I read all that and found myself being impressed that you know how to do an n with a tilda over it. South America is the only place I have ever really wanted to go. I am very jealous (a bit jealous about the flower too and feeling a bit gender disoriented by that - it's just not natural)
Keep the stories coming. I expect to start noticing swarthy cigar chewing tendencies from both of you.
I can't believe you know what a weblog is!! C'est fantastique!!!!!
Well my friend Che Guavara always told me that you don't need no stinkin' spanish.
Por Favor.
Hi Tom, as you already know I'm in Bs As and would love to meet you both once you come back on your way to Montevideo.
Enjoy your trip, Latin America is a terrific piece of the world to discover lots of unbelievable places, but keep on taking care of what you eat and drink.
Hasta pronto!
