The wine tasting was so good, gary brought us some excellent reds from this region in Salta, its only like 8 square hectars high in the mountains that produce this particular wine. its one of the best reds ive ever tasted. Sent Paul out to get me a couple of bottles the next day!
School was good, i like teaching the older ones - their english is so amazingly good for 10 year olds, like better than out GCSE standard. Some new people arrived in the hostel - two south african guys, Brendon and Simon, two canadian guys Andy and Mike and their respective american friends Grace and Theo who arent actually staying in the hostel. We went out to a bar round the corner with them all, and got a little bit more drunk than i had anticipated. Gary had to dose me up with painkillers the next day, he tried feeding me beer for a bit of hair of the dog on Friday morning but i couldnt face it.
Friday i had Querubines with Chris and Mitin, didnt say a word of English, just tickled one girl for about an hour, played jenga, ate chocolate lollipops and rushed
home for a bbq at Pablos house. There are two Pablos, or Pabs, as me and Jo like to call them, working at the hostel. Big Pabs is Garys best friend, he's constantly giggling and looks very huggable. Little Pabs works overnight, shuffles around like a mouse and mumbles 'disculpame' a lot (look it up).
So we all went round to big Pabs house, it looked like a warehouse from the outside, but inside...OH. MY. GOD. It was amazing. It was like something out of a film. He has a LIFT in his house. Its about 5 floors high, all open plan, with a pool in the garden and the biggest built in bbq ive ever seen, the tables were all laid out beautifully, i felt like we were in some swanky restaurant! Pabs' parents were in the theatre production business i think. Loaded. In fact all of Garys friends are loaded and extremely well connected, he knows the chairman of Boca for christs sake! Gary used to be an opthomologist but he's gone into business. So anyway, at the asado the meat was endless, all sorts were handed round. I tried some throat glands (mmm, crispy) then saw Chris
Tigre
Sailing down the delta, Dawsons Creek stylee had plonked something strange on my plate. I asked both him and Pabs what it was, he translated 'cesos', put on his best bemused expression and said he couldnt translate it, said it was meat from all over the body. Yet both him and Chris had smirks on their faces. I duly ate it, very soft and quite bland, crispy on the outside. I then turned to Gary, asked him what cesos was, and without hesitation he declared 'brains'. I nearly killed them both. Chris and Pabs found it all very hysterical. One of Pabs' friends is a magician so we had an impromptu magic show after the meal. All seemd so surreal, sitting there with a mix of Argentinians shouting in Spanish, and us Brits, Canadians and South Africans cheering along in Spanglish, sitting in a gorgeous house in Buenos Aires watching magic having just had a feast of a bbq!
On saturday we all went to a district called Tigre, just outside BA. Its meant to be the venice of Argentina. Not quite venice, but it was lovely, such a refreshing change from the city. We took a boat trip on a circuit round the delta, looking into peoples houses and their jetties - all very Dawsons Creek. We went to a restaurant and had fish of course - my first fish in Argy, some nice hake. Wandered round a market and went home, had some tactical naps then started the drinking games - Ring of Fire!!! we left the house at about 1am, went to a very posh club called Opera Bay, down at Puerta Madera. It was HUGE. There were different rooms for different music, but it was all fairly open plan, complete with pool. Argentinian men were a bit sleazy, and we kept losing each other, but eventually managed to get ourselves home, only minus Mandy, by 8am. Have only had a few hours sleep today. The others have gone to see a Boca match, but im trying to save some money, gonna try and get down to the south in a few weeks to see the glaciers. I went to the footy last week, and am planning on seeing Boca v River in October, so i gave it a miss. Me, Jo and Lisa have just been lazing around the hostel, watching Top Gun and The Naked Gun on the film channel. Its Katy and Kaushals last night tonight so we're gonna go to a bar called Buller in Palermo Viejo, really cool bar with good food. Think i need a power nap before all that tho. Gotta go, bed is calling....
