Buenos aires
Dit is de breedste straat ter wereld, 16 rijbanen door het centrum van BA. Jura' s sister Eiris (15) came over for three weeks to join us on our journey from BA to Ushuaia. Jura and I are great fans of the Dutch tv program "puber ruil", so we thought let's get ourselves a puber and see what happens!
It was great fun, we were driving and she was sitting in the back seat doing her homework and sleeping a lot.
Then we would wake her up to practise her English. He egg, what do you see outside!!
We found out that a puber does not like homework a lot, so we had to find other more appealing activities for her.
We tried driving the car on dirt roads, diving with sea lions in ice cold water, visiting national parks, swimming with huge waves. Besides that shopping turned out to be her favourite way of spending time.
In national park Valdez we saw sea elephant's 5 m long and weighing 4000 kg.
There were penguin colonies with one million animals in Punta Tombo.
Park Mt. Leon was not yet a highly promoted park but surprisingly beautiful where you could see the different layers in the earth. We also practised Thai-Boxing wit Eiris, she is a
natural talent. Her right is very strong and she started practising in the car on the sleeping mattresses.
We were pulled over many times by the police because we are driving a Brasilian car from Rio the Janeiro with blinded windows. Sometimes they want to give us a fine for stupid things, but as long as you keep pretending not to understand anything it takes to much of there energy to explain that they will eventually forget about it. We are just stupid gringo’s…..
In Rivadavia we went to the mechanic to fix the car, the crucero was broken. Besides that we exchanged the transmission fluid, they told us the car would like it a lot.
On the way there are many hitch hikers, but we can not take them, because or car is full.
Sometime there is no Nafta at the gas stations and people start lining up all around the block. The queue can be over two hours and people start behaving like predators hungry for the little Nafta that was left. We do not like standing in line so we would drive around and find someone who wants to sell his (or his neighbours) gasoline from the
tank in the car for double the price. Double the price is still very cheap here compared to the Netherlands and it takes only 15 minutes and a hose.
In Terra Fuego we had to switch over to the Chillean side, because there were no Argentinean roads that would connect the mainland to the Argentinean Islands in the south. The roads here are very bad but the car handled the gravel very well at a 100km/h. Then we had to switch back again to the Argentinean side. Every time we switched countries we had to go through the whole border theatre (El Teatro del Limite). Filling out many papers, importing or exporting the car, answering many questions about vegetables, honey, cheese, cars, taxes and how we can own a Brazilian car. It is a struggle to keep serious sometimes, because border controls seem so useless these days. Only Eiris had a hard time staying serious and she would not hide that when the car was about to be examined when she was still in there trying to sleep. Finally we arrived in Ushuaia in very bad weather, but it was beautiful here.
We drove to the end of the routa
