La Ruta40 km from the nearest hotel, I go to search for the field site in Aparicio.
Walking down the dusty road after the bus dropped me off on La Ruta, I started to wonder if looking for the field site without getting a hold of anyone was such a good idea. I had my huge backpack, 4 km to go, and didnīt even think to bring water. I was too concerned with trying to get off the bus at the right place to think about what would happen after I got off. I just tried to think of it as good exercise for my backpacking job this summer. It was just me and the countless armadillo roadkill on the side of the road. Hopefully I would not join them before my arrival in Aparicio.
About 2 km down the road, a truck drove by and stopped to offer me a ride. I eagerly hopped in the back, relieved to not have to walk any farther. We raced by agriculture field after agricultural field and I thought about the summer I lived on the ranch in eastern Colorado. The truck dropped me off right at the field station house, but no one was home. Booooooo!
I went to look for a phone and when I finally
Roadkill!Armadillo road-kill outside of Aparicio, poor little guy!
got through on some kind personīs cell phone, Diego, the researcher told me they were in Bahia Blanca and werenīt coming back to Aparicio until Wed. Hmmmm… that means I have to wait around for another 2 days, maybe more. I donīt have much time!! I just wrote him an email and said I would have to leave next Fri. May 5th, regardless of when I started. That is less than the original time of two weeks, but I just canīt wait around any longer.
I took the bus back to Dorrego to hang out for the night and met the cutest little 2 year old boy on the bus. He was sitting with his parents in front of me and we played hide and go seek for most of the ride. He was too shy to tell me his name, but he showed me hid nose, ears, and mouth. When he counted to 10, he said… cuatro, cinco, ocho, nueve, and then yelled DIEZ!! What a cutey! Now I have to figure out what I want to do tomorrow while I wait to volunteer.
Hmmmm... Monte Hermoso. I wonder whatīs there?
