Farewell Malaysia (I'll miss eating Indian for breakie!)
Published: April 3rd 2008Asia » Malaysia » Kedah & Perlis » Pulau LangkawiA two hour ferry ride from Georgetown in Penang and we had arrived in Lang Kawi, a small beach island just off the east coast of Malaysia. The weather was amazing and we couldn't wait to shed our heavy backpacks and hit the beach. We shared a taxi with a random European girl to save on costs and soon were checked into our room. No sooner had we dumped the bags and the heavens opened and it started to pour down. So out came the waterproof jackets... It didn't last for long thankfully and we ended up bumping into the two girls Becky and Emma who had also just arrived and were walking around trying to arrange accomodation. We arranged to go for some food together and headed back down the beach looking for a restaurant. ... read more
Why snorers should never ever stay in shared accomodation. (Georgetown in Penang)
Published: April 1st 2008Asia » Malaysia » PenangThe 5 hour bus ride to Penang was awful. The bus was old and and it took forever. The bus driver stopped every 10 minutes to pick up random people and the door kept billowing smoke which filled the whole bus with black dirty air that the driver seemd to totally ignore. We left the bus feeling very dirty, our skin and clothes were black but we were very relieved to be off the bus. After chatting on the Emma and Becs we decided to catch a taxi together into Georgetown to the our guesthouses. Lou and I were staying at the most lovely place called ...... which a was a relatively new guesthouse built in the most amazing restored building, and the girls were staying in somewhere a bit cheaper around the corner. It was ... read more
Arriving in the Cameron Highlands was a refreshing change from the hustle and bustle of the country's capital city, Kuala Lumphur. The Cameron Highlands, in stark contrast, is a cool and peaceful place with lots of lush greenery, winding hill roads and beautiful green mountains. We really appreciated being away from all the noise and having some peace and tranquility again. We had decided to stay in Tanah Rata at small backpackers hostel called Daniel's Lodge. After changing rooms because the first room had about a foot of rain water in, we settled into a lovely damp and mouldy room that smelled pretty bad. Even the sheets felt damp and we were starting to wonder why we had actually picked Daniel's Lodge. Feeling hungry, we decided to forget our room worries and head out for some ... read more
The city, the lights and oh my god the smell.....Kuala Lumpur of course!!
Published: March 6th 2008Asia » Malaysia » Wilayah Persekutuan » Kuala LumpurSquat toilets. Nothing can ever prepare you for your first ever squat toilet. The initial moment that passes as you enter the toilet and realise that you are actually going to have to use one of these things is a distressing one. Im sure the idea of using a squat toilet isn't so daunting for a man for obvious reasons, but for a female it is truely awful having to squat down low over a hole in the ground. To make it worse, you will never ever find toilet paper in an Asian squat toilet. No....that would cost you an extra 5 Ringits (the price of the use of the dirty and foul smelling toilet itself being 20 Ringits!) Instead, the Asians install a pipe like hose with which you are expected to "wash" yourself clean. ... read more
We travelled from Singapore to Malaysia by bus which is the easiest way to do it, but neither of us had really prepared ourselves for what lay ahead. As soon as we got off the bus we were surrounded by taxi drivers (at least 8 of them) trying to get us to go with them and not giving us time to think. Two white girls stand out like a sore thumb and the drivers obviously saw us as easy money. In the end we managed to get on the local bus to Melaka. Once on the bus and away from the baying taxi men we had time to actually look around and take things in. The shock was immediate - there were no signs in English and nobody on the bus spoke a word of English! ... read more
We bid farewell to our friends Danni, Michelle and Paul over a terrible Chinese in Sydney's Chinatown and soon were headed to the airport in search of a new adventure. After spending so long in Oz we were looking forward to going somewhere with a totally different culture, but we were sad to leave all of our good friends. It takes 7 hours to reach Singapore from Sydney, but flying with Qantas it passes quickly. We were kept amused with the fantastic in-flight entertainment system and the quality of the meals (including hot chocolate with marshmallows!) After an incident involving my lips and tongue getting completely stuck to an ice-lolly, we finally arrived in Singapore. The humidity was the first thing that greeted us as we got off the plane. Man, it is sooo hot! Singapore ... read more
Australia goes out with a bang in Sydney!!
Published: January 12th 2008Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » SydneyAnd so we headed to the only destination in our travels where we had planned to be there at a particular time. For as long as i could remember i had dreamed of spending Christmas and New Year in Sydney. We caught the Greyhound bus back up to Sydney after spending a fantastic two weeks in Melbourne (even had the same driver who took us on the fatal journey down to Melbourne!) We were both so sad to leave Melbourne as it is one of the best cities we have both ever been to and we met so many great friends here. Arrived in Sydney very tried after what was to be our last overnight bus ride in Australia. Thank god! Our first day there we met back up again with our good friends Paul, Nina, ... read more
Melbourne & The Great Ocean Road
Published: January 12th 2008Oceania » Australia » Victoria » MelbourneBefore I start writing about Melbourne I have got to first tell you about our journey to the city. Whilst we were in Byron bay Linz and I decided that we were not fussed about stopping off anywhere in between Byron and Melbourne, so in order to have more time in the city we opted to do the trip down in one go. Australia is a massive place and the journey was going to take us 28 hours to get there (crazy we know!), so we went to the supermarket and stocked up on food to keep us going for the day-long road trip ahead. We left Byron on the 6pm bus to Sydney - a 12 hour ride - everything was fine until Linz went into our bag and realised that someone had stolen the ... read more
Surfers Paradise and Byron Bay
Published: January 11th 2008Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Byron BaySo at this point we have been travelling in Australia for almost 2 months and we have only just made it past half way down the east coast! My mam only realised at this pont just how huge Oz is when she looked at a map and realised how many overnight trips we had been on, how little we were down the east coast and how far we still had to come! Oz is so big - you can fit the whole of Europe inside its land mass. It's just unimaginable quite how big this place is. The best thing about Australia so far?....The Sun?..... The Cold beers (aparently the Aussies say theirs are the coldest in the world).....No - it has got to be the name of places!! We've visited places called Rainbow Beach, 1770, ... read more
Back in the city... Brisbane (aka Bris-vegas!)
Published: December 28th 2007Oceania » Australia » Queensland » BrisbaneAfter a brief stopover in Rainbow Beach we arrived in the big city of Brisbane. Up until we arrived in Brisbane we had spent so much time in small towns that we were happy to be back in a big city - although our clothes were more suited to the beach! We spent a lot of our time visiting the art galleries and museums, as a result we left without many photographs of the city which is a shame. Linz took full advantage of being near Starbucks once again (she has developed a rather worrying addiction to mocha frappacinos)! It had been recommended that we should stay in Bunk Backpackers in Fortitude Valley and we were pleased we had listened to our friends as the hostel was really nice, we had our own en-suite bathroom ajoined ... read more
