Hard and bleak!
That's about the worst story I've ever heard about magical (not) NZ. I'm also a fan of traveling during the off-season to avoid crowds and high prices, but it sounds as if you paid too-high a price. Rescue--oh, yes! Glad you and your toes made it out alive.

I'd still recommend New Zealand in the off season, I just needed to take the hint that some activities are better left for summertime! Mildford Sound managed to be bleak and beautiful at the same time :)
