The Aya Sofya can't be taken out of context. It is surrounded by other ancient structures on a beautiful point above the Bosphorus. Looking out the windows you get a view of Topkapi, home to the endless intrigue of many Ottoman sultans.

The Aya Sofya is a lot like the Louvre for me, but it has taken me eleven months and five visits to come to that conclusion, and this might take some explaining. It’s not a very obvious parallel.
