This street is located in the Marais district of Paris. Marais was once a swamp, and was developed in the 12th century. It has medieval architecture and narrow roads. This district was a favorite of Henry IV. He built Place Royale in 1605-1612, later this area became known as Place des Vosges in 1605-1612. This square is one of the oldest in Paris, and Paris’ first attempt at urban planning. The district fell in popularity after the Revolution of 1789. In the late 19th & beginning of the 20th century it became a major center for the Jewish community in Paris.
