Hovhannavank Monastery

Just up the road from the town of Ashtarak, about 40m Marshrutka-ride from Yerevan, is a gorge with a couple of spectacular, albeit partially derelict monasteries. Hovhannavank shows the typical Armenian architecture of a top looking like a half-folded umbrella. It sits right on the edge of a gorge.
